Some ten days ago Mr Hatrick, of Wanganui, by arrangement with the Lands Department, sent one of his little steamers up the Wanganui Eiver for 20 or 25 miles beyond Pipiriki and thence up the Tangarakau Kiver for a further distance of 10 or i2 miles. Tho expedition was undertaken for the purpose of testing how far this great waterway was navigable. Two of the Governmsnt road surveyors went with the steamer, and they will in due course furnish full report?. It is believed that no steamer has been so far up the Wanganui River before. Within the next few years the country from Pipiriki inland is bound to be the field of cpjfsiderable settlement. ,y' : . >
