The Government recently received a communication from the Premier of Victoria suggesting the expediency of a conference of representatives from the various Australasian colonies to devise steps for preventing the introduction of infectious diseases, such as smallpox, &c. The matter was considered in Cabinet on Saturday, and it was decided not to take any action pending further enquiries. Mr Lawry, M.H.E., had a long interview on Saturday last with the Minister of Agriculture with reference to the driving clauses in the Stock Act passed last session. The Minister stated that .the intention of the Act was to protect settlers against cattle and sheep-stealing, and that it would in no j§ r j e V e used to har ass stock-owners. He added that a circular to that effect would at an early data' be issued and sent to all the inspectors of the Stock Department.
