AV'ith a view of organising the whole of the station hands of this Colony, the general secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union has been instructed to compile a directory containing the various sheep stations from Auckland to the Bluff. At a meeting of the Union on Saturday evening, resolutions were passed expressing: satisfaction that the trades union sheep shears were used by most of the mernbors this season, a record for New Zealand having been established by Mr Lundon, an ex-presidont of the Union, who shore 3COO sheep with one pair of new shears.

Dunedin, January 28. John Gitillimot, a prisoner undergoing five years' penal servitude, struck the warder (Keardon) in the face while employed at the Taiaroa Heads works. When charged with the offence at the Police Court to-day Guilb> mot pleaded eruilty to the act, but said he was provoked by the ill-treatment of the warder and lost his temper. The gaoler (Mr Phillips) offered to produce Witnesses. The Bench was satisfied that it was not necessary, and sentenced the prisoner to a reduction of conduct marks equal to six months off his /emission of sentence. A five-roomed wooden house at Mornington, owned by Mr Callaway, and occupied by Mr Eggers, cabinetmaker, was destroyed by fire last night, little or no furniture being saved. The house was insured for £2OO in the North British and Meccantile office, and the furniture for £l5O in the National. Invercargill, January 28.

A fire broke out shortly after midnight in Temple Chambers, Esk stroet. Mr \V. Smith's (printer) plant was damaged to the extent of about £6OO. It was insured in the South British office for £125, and the Standard for .£420. Mr W. Hall's ironmongery stock was seriously damaged by fire and water. Hall's stock is insured for £IOOO in the Commercial Union and £SOO in the New Zealand. His loss amounts to over £IOOO.

At the Police Court to-day, Wm. Learnwith, of Queen street, was charged with breaches of the Shop and Shop Assistants Act. Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr Ferguson said he found that the girls worked on alternate days 10 and 14 hours and on Saturdays 10 hours. Mr Northcroft, S.M., fined the defendant 5s on each charge, and costs £L 7s.

A s the barque Bella was weighing anchor to sail for the Kaipara, Captain Nettingham got his leg broken by the anchor chain. He was taken home, and Captain Capo takes charge of the barque. The Auckland Freezing Company have issued circulars to the owners of sheep, stating that if farmers will give the company fair support, they may be induced to continue operations and lower their freezing charges to a level with those of the freezing companies at other large centres. Only five bodies have yet been recovered of the ten persons drowned in the Kaipara boating accident. At two concerts on board the Tas..iania on the voyage from Sydney, the sum of £5 12s was collected for the Shipwreck Relief Society. A bushman named William Macallum was crushed while jacking logs near Dargaville, and died of his injuries.
