GREYTOWN.

Greytown, January 27. One of our oldest settlers. Mrs Jane Udy, relict of Mr Hart Udy, senr., died on Saturday at the ripe old age of 83 years, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Welch, at Matarawa. She leaves a number of children, a greater number of grandchildren, and a large number of great grandchildren. Mrs Udy was one of the pioneer settlers of the Wairarapa, and with her late husband went through many startling experiences in the early settlement of the province of Wellington. The remains of deceased will be laid to rest in the quiet cemetery at Greytown on Monday, in the same grave with her late husband, who predeceased his wife only three years. The Native Land Court closed its sittings here on Saturday, and many important matters to the Natives were dealt with, including some applications with reference to the division of certain sums which have been given to those interested in the Wairarapa Lake.

The ratepayers of the borough are very much exercised just now as to a supply of water for use in the case of fire, and many "are. the schemes afloat. No noubt some inexpensive*s scheme should be adopted, as the town i& virtually surrounded by water, and there should be no engineering difficulties in obtaining a good supply. , The Surveyor-General has informed the Greytown Committee, with reference to the proposed track across the ranges, that he has sent a surveyor to have a look at the country between here and Otaki.

The probable origin of many a mysterious fire was illustrated at Mr J. Tocker's smithy, GreytOwn, on Saturday. It appears that a piece of old sacking, on which turpentine had been poured, had been used in cleaning some machinery and then thrown out into the yard. some time after the rag was found to be smoking. To test the matter, the rag was attached for some time, when the whole piece was nearly consumed and a hole burned in a piece of timber on which it was lying. A bucket of water soon extinguished the fire.
