CARTERTON.
The Carterton School Committee have made arrangements for taking the children by excursion train to "Wellington on Friday next, 31st instant. They will receive the names of children and guardians intending to go to-night, also Parkvale, Clareville, Dalefield and Belvedere Schools. Last year the excursion was a great success, and on this occasion we may expect an increase in numbers.
The freezing companies are giving 9s for wethers and 7s for ewes for freezing purposes. Breeders wonder why such a low price prevails here, whilst at Addmgton Yards sheep for freezing fetch from 10s to 13s. Farmers here are quite willing- to breed the class of sheep best suited to the London market, but when they go in for Down or Down cross the Wellington companies reject them for larger and heavier breeds, and yet we see the London quotations are always higher for Canterbury mutton than for Wellington. It is time this question was gone into in the interest of breeders in this district.
A farmers' club is very much needed in the Wairarapa. There can be no union of interests without it. A central place where farmers could meet weekly to discuss matters of common interest would be an immense boon. The. price of grain conld be regulated each season, and what to grow as well. Samples could be sent in of all kinds of seeds, and markets could be found. There has already been an informal discussion of the question here, and something may come out of it this coming winter. Mr G. A. Fairbrother has commenced auctioneering, and held his maiden sale on Saturday last in the premises recently occupied as a store by Messrs R. Fairbrother and Son. The building was fairly packed with buyers, and the sale lasted five hours. If this sale is to be taken as a criterion of what is to follow his success is assured. He has a wide circle of friends, and is sure to receive good support.
The American Juvenile Dramatic Company opened here on Saturday t 6 a very thin house. The piece they staged was " Ended Up." They take the other Wairarapa towns this week. Sports were held at Gladstone on Anniversary Day, which drew quite a large gathering. They had hack races and pedestrian competitions, which lasted till a late hour.
