WELLINGTON SOCIAL GOSSIP.

January 20. A very jolly time was spent by those fortunate enough to be present at the small dance given by Mr Martin Chapman and his nieces on Thursday night. The drawing-room was used for dancing, which was kept up vigorously until midnight. Miss Chapman wore a becoming frock of salmon pink silk crepon with white lace trimming ; her sister wore cream silk and lace. Mrs W. B. Lees acted as chaperon and wore black and pale blue. Others were Miss Eila Williams in white satin ; Miss Friend, white trimmed withohiffm and violets; Miss Fairchild, pretty pale yellow silk; the Misses Rose, white merveilleux with chiffon frills; the Misses Gore, Cooper, Grace, Hislop, Izard, and the Messrs Brook-Smith, Williams, Gore, Tripp, Cooper, Hodson, Rolleston, &c.

Some pretty street costumes I have seen lately were worn by Mrs C. Tanner, whose gown was of biscuit-colour fine crepon, with bodice of very pale heliotrope silk covered with ecru lace, the folded collar and belt being of the same silk, and with this was worn a small jet bonnet trimmed with lace wings and pink shaded roses; Miss O’Connor looks nice in a mustardcoloured gown, with trimmings of corn-flower-blue velvet, hat to match; Mrs Fitchett, very stylish light drab crepon silk gown, with round puff sleeves to the elbow of pink and- white pompadour silk and shoulder trimmings of point ecru lace, small black toque, trimmed with black tips, fastened with jet ornaments and magenta roses; Miss E. Rose, thin white cotton crepon trimmed with lace

insertion, coarse black straw hat trimmed with rosettes of black chiffon and cornflowers; Miss Duncan, black crepon skirt and broad black and white striped silk blouse bodice, small floral toque; Mrs (Dr) Collins, grey tweed jacket and skirt, light blouse and light grey felt hat trimmed with ribbon and white wings; Miss Knight (Sydney), pretty pale smoke-grey crepon; very crinkled, with bodice of white accordion chiffon over white silk and finished with a white s’lk sash, large white Leghorn hat trimmed with upstanding tips and ribbon bows ; Miss McKellar (Palmerston North), black crepon skirt, very pale blue pompadour silk blouse bodice and black lace toque trimmed with jet and forget-me-nots ; Miss Chapman (Melbourne), pretty flowered muslin gown trimmed with moss-green silk, white hat. Mrs J. Barker (Rangitikei) is staying with her mother, Mrs G. S. Cooper, Karori. Miss McKellar (Palmerston North) is staying with Mrs Eliott. Judge and Mrs Williams, of Dunedin, are here just now and are staying at Mrs Swainson's, Fitzherbert terrace. Miss Tripe is visiting friends in Palmerston North. I hear that the Thorndon Tennis Club’s Championship Singles, both ladies and gentlemen, are to come off either this or next week. I believe that it is not Miss Nunneley’s intention to compete. Violet.
