THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

London, January 15. The Governor of Malta has stopped the proposed import duties on frozen meat. On the above subiect the Premier has received the following cablegram from the Premier of New South Wales: —“Agent-General has cabled in the following terms ‘Secretary of State for Colonies informs me Governor of Malta has stopped in Council of Government Bill imposing larger import duties on frozen meat. Please inform other Governments.’ The Legislative Council of Malta consists of six official members, four members who represent the clergy, nobility, land-owners, the University and merchants on basis of <£6o franchise, and ten members elected by present electorate. The elected members have full control of finance and local matters. The right of veto is reserved to the Governor, and in the instance under notice he appears to have exercised it to prevent an embargo being laid upon the import of frozen meat. Some choice Jersey cattle, consisting of a bull, five cows and four calves, which arrived by the lonic two months ago to the order of Mr F. A. White, of Auckland, were released from Somes’ Island last week, after the usual GO days’ quarantine, and will be shipped North by the Manapouri.
