TURF GOSSIP.

By "Gipsy King." RACING STATISTICS, 1894-5. The United Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting concluded the 1894-5 season's racing, and, with commendable promptitude, the local turf statistician, " Oileus," contributes his carefully-compiled annual budget to the Canterbury Times, From the figures published in our contemporary, I gather that Mahaki heads the list of winning horses, the prize money won by the Maori-owned horse totalling .£1434. Next on the list is the Hon J. D. Ormond's horse, North Atlantic, with £1 387 against his name. Third place on the list is occupied by that consistent performer Prime Warden, who credited his owners, Messrs Hobbs Bros., with .£l32B—with only three wins to his credit. Casket has the respectable total of .£llß7 against his name. Last year's New Zealand Cup winner, Impulse, had only one win, but Mr Biladley's cheque for that race was .£1157.

In the list of winning sires St. Leger comes first with 19 winners, who won 44 races, valued at .£4569, the defunct sires Noudenfeldt and Maxim coming next with .£4165 and .£4023 respectively. It may probably be more interesting to my readers if I place the winning horses and sires under the districts to which they belong. I will take those nearer home, as having a local interest, and will bracket Wellington and Wairarapa and Wanganui and Taranaki:— Winning Horses. Welliiigton-Wairarapa.

RESRAINT OF INCITEMENTS TO BETTING OR WAGERING. The above is the remarkable title of the Bill that Mr W. Hutchison, the member for Dunedin, will ask Parliament to waste its time over shortly. " A block and tackle" or "hydraulic power" to restrain people from enjoying themselves as their fancy pleases them would have been an appro, priate title for this ridiculous Bill. Sporting people are noted as being of a very generous nature, and they will derive some comfort from the fact that this tyrannically disposed Bill has at least done

some little good by giving work to the compositors who set it up. The provisions of this Bill are so utterly absurd that it is not worth while seriously commenting on it, but as many will probably never receive a copy, I will here quote the main features of this autocratic measure, for the purpose ot letting the general public see how some members of Parliament think they should be dealt with if they dare to make a wager or send a "tip " to a friend. Clause No. 1 gives the short title.

No 2. If anyone for the purpose of earning a commission, reward or other profit, sends or causes to be sent to any person any circular, notice, advertisement, letter, telegram or other document which invites, or may reasonably be implied to invite, the porson receiving it to make any bet or wager, or to enter into or take any share or interest in any betting or wagering transaction, or to apply to any person or at any place with a view to obtaining information or advice for the purpose of any bet or wager, or for information as to any race, fight, game, sport or other contingency upon which betting ana wagering is generally carried on, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanour, and shall be liable, if convicted on indictment, to imprisonmenb with or without hard labour for a term not exceeding three months, or to a fine not exceeding one hundred pounds, or to both imprisonment and fine; and, if convicted on pummary conviction, to imprisonment with or without hard labour for a term not exceeding one month, or to a fine not exceeding twenty pounds, or to both im« prisonment and hne. If any such circular, notice, advertisement, letter, telegram or other document as in this section mentioned names or refeis to any one as a person to whom any payment may be made, or from whom information may be obtained, for the purpose of or in relation to betting cr wagering, the person so named or referred to shall be deemed to have sent or caused to be sent such document as aforesaid, unless he proves that he had not consented to be so named and that he was not in any way a party to and was wholly ignorant of the sending of such document. 3. If any one publishes, or causes or permits to be published, in any newspaper, Book, pamphlet, or other publication, any tip, betting odds, or other information or advice as to betting or wagering upon any contingency whatever, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanour, and shall be liable, if convicted, to imprisonment with or without hard labour for .a term not exceeding one month, or to a fine not exceeding twenty pounds.

4. If any one for the purpose of earning commission, reward, or other profit, receives a stake or deposit upon the terms or understanding that the same is to be paid or handed over to one of the depositors, or any person acting on his behalf, upon the result of a contingent event upon which betting or wagering is generally carried on, the handing over of such stake or deposit shall in no wise discharge the stakeholder or deposit-holder from his responsibility to return the said stake or deposit to any person depositing the same, irrespective of the result of the event upon which it has been made, and notwithstanding the said stake or deposit has been handed over to one of the depositors in accordance with the terms of the understanding agreed upon.

5. In any proceeding against any porson for an offence under this Act, such person, and his wife or husband, as the case may be, may, if such person thinks fit, be called, sworn, examined, and cross-examined as an ordinary witness in the case. 6. This Act shall come into operation immediately upon receiving the assent of the Governor. V.R.C. GRAND NATIONAL HURDLE RACE. The following account of the above race, in which several ex-New Zealanders were engaged, is taken from the Melbourne Sportsman: —

" As the twenty-two horses left the post behind them for their three-mile journey, the colours of Favor, Gratiano and Bush Boy were in front; then came Bischoff, Dart, Eyry, Woonooke, Duke of Kent and Ripple. The first hurdle near the distance was negotiated by. Gratiano, with Bush Boy, Favor and Oarsman in close pursuit. Passing the stand, Gratiano was making the pace very warm, Bush Boy a good second, then Kangaroo 11., Ripple, Oarsman, Favor, Bischoff, Woonooke, The Provost, Emmalea, Dart, and Duke of Kent whipper-in. There was no alteration in the order of running as the hurdle-racers swept along the river side, with the exception that Kangaroo had gone up into second place, attended by Ripple. Along the back Gratiano eased off, and at the bridge gave way to Kangaroo 11., Ripple and Leap Year. Approaching the abattoirs, Bischoff and Bush Boy closed up on the leaders, Gratiano next. The second division, which was some eight lengths in the rear, was piloted by Favor, Dart and Oarsman. Turning into the straight, Kangaroo 11. was making the pace a scorcher, which appeared to suit Gratiano, who had again assumed second in command, with. Ripple, Bush Boy, The Provost, Bischoff, Dart, Muscovite, Woonooke and Apsley close iip; J. E. Brewer nursing Emmalea in the centre of the field. Bischoff ran into first place at the hurdle in the straight and led the field a merry dance down the straight, passing the judge's box a length in advance of Ripple, who was attended by Kangaroo 11., Emmalea, Bush Boy, Woonooke, Apsley, The Provost, Favor, Muscovite, Dart, and Brooklyn, whilst Chesterman was lagging behind, last. The Tasmanian-bred chestnut led out of the turn and along the Saltwater River, with Kangaroo 11., Emmalea, Ripple, and The Provost. On racing up to the bridge the latter ran alongside Bischoff, the pair having a slight advantage of Ripple, with Emmalea, some lengths off, fourth; then came Dart, Bush Boy, Muscovite, Kangaroo, Woonooke and Kapo. Having left the bridge behind them, Dart

ran up into third place, Brewer crawling quietly up into an excellent position. The Provost hung out signals of distress at the back, where Bischoff and Dart were leading. Bischoff was running first-class at the sheds, but it was very evident to the stand supporters of Eramalea that she had the race in hand. After leaving the scraping sheds, turning into the straight, Bischoff had a slight advantage of Emmalea. From this to the finish the race was never in doubt, and although the Ballarat horse led over the last hurdle, Emmalea had a mortgage over the Grand National, landing home a winner in a common canter by a couple of lengths, Woonooke beating Muscovite for second money by a length and a half; Bischoff, three-quarters of a length away, fourth; Kapo fifth, Bush Boy sixth, Brooklyn seventh, Navarino eighth, The Provost ninth, Dart tenth; followed by Favor, Neli, Gratiano, Duke of Kent. Apsley, Artist and Kangaroo 11., with Chesterman last. Time, smin 55£sec."
