EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held on June 26. The members of the Board present were—Rev J. Paterson (in the chair), Dr Newman, M.H.E., Messrs W. A. Pitzherbert, P. H. Praser, W. W. McCardle, J. Young and W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R. It was announced that the overdraft amounted to .£l9O 5s 9d. The payments required were —Capitation account, £3908 7s 10d; and building account, .£9l Is ; making a total of £4OOO 8s lOd. Mr Young brought up the case of Miss Jessie Moncrieff, a pupil-teacher at Carterton, who, at the suggestion of the headmaster of her school, had visited town on several occasions in order to acquire knowledge of the Kindei'garten system of education. The young lady had had to pay her own train fares, &c., which he regarded as decidedly hard. Mr Young moved that Miss Moncrieff's actual travelling expenses be allowed. This was agreed to. The resignations of Miss Ellen J. Howan, Kereru, and Mr Ralph Haybittle, pupil teacher at Mount Cook School, were accepted.

On the motion of Dr Newman it was decided to allow the Council of the Middle District University College to meet in the large hall of the Education Board's building on the 4th July at 10.30 a.m. It was decided to leave the application of Mr H. H. Dyer—who asked for an additional week's holiday—in the hands of the chairman and secretary.

It was decided to alter the winter vacation to later in the year on account of the bad weather. On the motion of Mr McCardle it was decided that the chairman and the mover should act as a committee to enquire into the appeal of Mr John Scarff (Hastwell), who protested against the expulsion of his daughter from the Hastwell School. Mr Chas. Staff was appointed pupil teacher at Levin.

It waa decided to adopt the desire of the Mauriceville School Committee, and transfer the present pupil teacher of the school as soon as the chairman of the Board could find a suitable teacher to replace the present teacher. The chairman and Mr McCardle were authorised to effect repairs to the teacher's residence at Mauriceville, such repairs not to exceed £SO.

A letter was received from Mr R. Acheson (Carterton) as to the recent election of the local committee. It was decided merely to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Acheson's letter, but to take no further action.

Mr Savage, chairman of the Kaitoke School Committee, waited upon the Board and asked that the salary of Miss Hamilton, the teacher of the Kaitoke School, should not be reduced as had been intimated. Mr Savage said the present teacher would be compelled to leave if her salary was reduced, and then the school would assuredly languish and eventually become extinct. The Board decided not to reduce Miss Hamilton's salary. The request of the Grey town School Committee, that a local constable be appointed as truant officer, was agreed to. Repairs, amounting to .£29 7s 6d, to the Korokoro School were ordered to be effected.

The Ngaturi School Committee were invited to send in a plan of the proposed shelter-shed, and the Board authorised the expenditure of «£lO on the proposed work.

It was decided to connect the water supply with the school at Cross Creek, and to leave the question of building' new outbuildings at Hastwell School to the chairman and Mr McCardle.

On the motion of Dr Newman, the chairman, Mr Fraser and the mover were appointed the Board's delegates at the approaching conference of the education boards of the Colony. It was decided to pay the rent of an aided schoolroom at Makuri. The question of clearing the site of the proposed new school was held over. On the resolution of Mr McCardle, the offer to clear the school site at Matarau at 35s per acre was accepted, and the sum of .£SO was granted in aid of the proposed school house. A shelter shed was ordered to be erected at Waihenga, and .£1 was granted for gravelling purposes. The question of painting the Karori School was deferred to next meeting of the Board. The Board then went into committee. Dunedin, June 20. The Education Board has appointed Messrs Macgregor, Green and Mackenzie its delegates to the Educational Conference.

The Education Board to-day returned a letter from Mr P. B. Praser, late teacher at Wairakei, who made charges against the inspector concerning which the Board has held an enquiry.

Christchurch, June 24.

At a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College to-day the committee of enquiry as to the agreement with and the salaries and fees of the professors and lecturers on the staff of the College recommended the Board to give 12 months' notice to terminate the existing engagements with the professors of chemistry, mathematics and classics, and to offer them new appointments to the chairs at present held by them at a salary of £9OO per annum each. The committee also recommended that a salary of £6OO per annum be offered to the next occupant of the chair, English literature and history. The report was adopted.' It was resolved that a commission be appointed in England to select a professor to fill the chair of English literature and history, rendered vacant by the resignation of Professor Brown.

Gisborne, June 24.

At a meeting of the Gisborne School Committee it was decided to invite Mr Lewis to attend a meeting on "Wednesday night, and substantiate bis statements regarding the conduct of school children.
