Masterton, June 20.

The weather since Tuesday has been cold and wintry, and last night there was a pretty heavy fall of snow on the surrounding hills. The sitting of the Magistrate's Court this morning was the lightest we have had for months, only two civil cases being heard. As the civil sittings of the Court are held only once a fortnight it may fairly be assumed that things in the line of business have taken a turn for the better. The members of the Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade held their annual social gathering in the Brigade Station last evening, Captain Daniell in the chair. Several toasts were proposed and responded to, refreshments were provided, and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent. The traction engine of Mr Edward Jones, of Masterton, was being driven across a bridge over the Kopuaranga River, when the flooring of the bridge suddenly collapsed and the engine fell about 18ft into the river below. A young man named Shute was on the engine at the time it fell, and escaped with only a few bruises. The river is about sft deep at the place at which the accident occurred. The engine weighs about 10 tons. A staff of Mr C. E. Darnell's men left Masterton this morning for the scene of the accident, to endeavour to extricate the engine.

Blinkhorne; J.W., Bro. Cole ; 5.8., Bro. Sillars ; J. 8., Bro. Nicol. Three new members were proposed, and the takings of the evening amounted to .£ls 15s 6d. Masterton, June 24.

While Mr E. Holmwood was driving with Miss Kummer on Saturday night in Queen street the king-bolt of the buggy came out, and the back portion of the shafts fell on to the horse's legs. Miss Kummer was thrown out of the buggy, and received a severe shaking, whilst Mr Holmwood was dragged along the road for some distance by the horse, which made off at top speed. Fortunately he was not seriously injured. The only damage to the vehicle was a broken shaft.

Constable Joseph May has been appointed local agent of the Labour Bureau and Inspector of Factories, vice Sergeant Henry McArdle, who, through presstire of work, was compelled to resign. Heavy rain has been falling for the past 24 hours, which Avill result in rabbit poisoning operations being temporarily suspended. The quarterly sitting of the District Court is to be held on Wednesday before District Judge Kettle.

A female Court of Foresters is to be formed here at an early date.
