ANCHORAGE FOR YACHTS.

The yacht-owners of the port have made a, request to the Harbour Board that a sheltered anchorage for their yachts should be constructed for them adjacent to "Waterloo quay.. They proposed that a wall jetty should be thrown out at right angles to the length of 400 ft. The ; Wharves and Accounts Committee

reported at the meeting of the Board last •week that they were divided as to the wisdom of the proposed scheme and expenditure, but they were of opinion that if the work is to be carried out it should be on a larger scale than the scheme laid before them, and with an expenditure of Hot less than ,£3OOO. Mr Beauchamp thought the yachtsmen should be encouraged in their pastime, and the Board, should, give them whatever 'assistance could. Many yachtsmen had been quite heart-broken at the losfes. they had sustained during recent gales. Other members of the Board, also expressed the. opinion that the yachtsmen, should be assisted, while at the same time.

the Board should have due regard to the •future requirements for the shipping of the port, and that any accommodation provided should be of a permanent character, "'

The Chairman (Mr Gale) thought the, yacht-owners should approach the Government/and ask for a share of the water beyond the Board's endowment. He would, t)ien be ; quite prepared to support, any, expenditure to provide shelter. for the yachts of a permanent nature, It s would pay tKe Board better to v guarantee; the damage to the yachts than make the proposed, expehditure. It would riot be right to consent to any work that might in -any measure, be detrimental to the thing-was •as, plain as a pikestaff. Let men/ say to the Government, give us: a certain, amount of thei Railway Reserve, we can arrange for the Harbour Board to give us shelter of a permanent nature. Every member of the Board, he was sure, was willing to support the pastime of .yachting-

Mr Heaton thought the Board should

give an answer one way or the other, as it was a matter of urgency. They should remember they had kept the yachtsmen on the string for a great many years. The Board should deal with the matter, and

<not let it go to the Government. It was decided on the motion of Mr' Beauchamp, seconded by Mr Booth, "That •a; reply be sent to the yachtsmen that the Board cannct see its way to adopt their suggestion as to site and expenditure, but if •arrangements can be made with the. Railway Department for the water right beyond the Board endowment to the north the Hoard will favourably consider any reasonable proposals, or any other alternate and practical scheme."
