HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Hutt County Council met on Tuesday: Present —Councillors Cook (chairman), J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. Jillett, F. A. Majendie, F. Bradey, H. A. Field and G. Brown.
Mr J. C. Clapham waited upon the Council and stated that he would not con-; tribute toward the cost of Stebbing road, which leads to his property, until it had been gazetted. The matter was left in the hands of the councillors of the Porirua Riding. Mr W. H. Field wrote stating that he and Mrs Field would only give their land for a county road provided they obtained the same concessions as others through whose property the road passed. The secretary of the Manawatu Railway Company wrote directing attention to an encroachment on the line near Wainui Station by the proposed county road, Whareroa. Ihakara te Ngarara and Mackay Bros, also wrote objecting to the proposed county road. Consideration of these objections was held over until next meeting. Schedules from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, with particulars showing how the accrued thirds to 30th April last were to bo allotted and spent, were referred to Councillor Field. A letter from Stratford asked the Council to support a resolution in favour of
rating on the unimproved value of land. The Council resolved that the matter should be placed in the hands of the delegate appointed by the Stratford County Council to attend the session of the New Zealand Counties’ Association. Mr L. G. Reid wrote with reference to Mr 11. Buick’s application asking the Council to assist in the construction of Mr Martin’s road, Paraparaumu. The matter was left in Councillor Field’s hands. Councillor Field stated that he had recommended that £2 10s should be expended on the road.
It Was decided that Mr Knigge should be allowed to fence the back boundary of hiS property provided he erected and maintained an efficient fence, and did not in any way block the road on the other side of Silverstream.
It was decided that Councillor Brown and the Inspector of Roads should report upon the damaged groin at the first gorge in the Epuni road at next meeting. The Inspector of Roads’ monthly report was read and adopted. Mr R. G. Martin asked the Council to take a road through Section 172, Block XIII., Akatarawa, under the Public Works Act. He agreed to indemnify the Council against all cost. The matter was left in Councillor Speedy’s hands. A motion by Councillor Wakeham that after the payment of its fair share towards the cost of charitable aid and general administration the whole of the rates both general and separate to the present value be granted to the Wamui-o-mata Riding for the period of three years was lost. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Field, that general and separate rates be struck, the same as last-year, and that the clerk give notice forthwith. An amendment, proposed by Councillor Speedy, to the effect that in the Belmont and Wainui-o-mata ridings the general rate should be -Id in the £ and the separate rate £d in the £ was lost. It was decided that Councillor Field and the clerk have authority to obtain the opinion of the county solicitor as to whether compensation can be claimed by owners of lands through which any proposed roads may be required to be taken. Accounts amounting to £627 5s lid were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
