PALMERSTON.
Palmerston North, June 6. At the District Court to-day, George Storey, pleaded guilty to a charge of opening a letter which was being passed through the Palmerston office, and was remanded for the report of the Probation Officer. Mr Hankins, addressing the Court on behalf of Storey, said that the accused felt very bitterly the position in which he found himself. He had never committed an offence of the kind previously,-neither had he been charged with an offence in this or any other Court. Ho had been 19 years in the service of the Government, and during the whole of that time, so far as he knew, he had never been known to carry out his duties m an improper manner. Andrew F. Laurenson, building contractor, was found guilty of a breach of the Bankruptcy Act in failing to keep proper books, and was admitted to probation. Palmerston North, June 11. At the adjourned sitting of the Palmerston North Licensing Bench to-day, the renewals of the licenses of the Albion and Star Hotels were granted. The chairman made strong remarks on the conduct of both houses. He advised the proprietor of the Star Hotel to change the licensee as soon as possible, and said it was unlikely that the license for the Albion Hotel would be renewed to the same person again.
Extensions to 11 o’clock similar to last year were again granted.
