THE LABOUR MARKET.

From the May number of the Journal of the Department of Labour, [we take the following reports concerning the labour market: — Wellington.- -Building trade Fairly busy. Engineering trades Very dull. Boot trade—Slight improvement on last month, though still dull. Otaki.—Trade in general—Quiet. Unskilled labour —No demand for any extra labour, and there is very little bush-felling to be done this winter. Featherston. —Trade in general—Fairly busy. Unskilled labour—Most local men aro employed; several swaggers have passed through, and a few of them have found employment. Mabtinbokououi. Building trade Very quiet. Boot trade —Fairly busy. Retail trades —Quiet. Unskilled labour —Large number of men on the roads. Very little bushfeiling is going on, and several large stationholders have discharged hands. Mastebton. Building trades Very quiet. Engineering—Busy. Other trades —Fairly busy. Retail trades Quiet. Unskilled labour—Still a number of men unemployed. Tenui. —Unskilled labour —Not many swaggers on the roads, but many local men are idle.

Eketahuna. Building trades—Fairly busy. Unskilled labour —Road formation and metalling has been stopped owing to bad weather, but the men are employed clearing the slip 3 on roads and railways. Pahiatua. —Building and engineering trades —Fairly busy. Retail trades —Quiet. Unskilled labour —Not so many local men out of employment. The number of swaggers is decreasing. Maeton.—Trade in general—Still fairly busy. Unskilled labour —Very few men looking for work. Bushfeiling is expected to keep all men in employment. Hunterville. Building trades Fairly busy. Clothing trades —Dull. Sawmilling—Dull. Other trades—Fair. Unskilled labour—A large number of men unemployed. During April 4 artisans and 1309 labourers were employed by the Survey Department, 554 of the labourers being employed in the Wellington district, while 131 artisans and 752 labourers were employed by the Public Works Department. Of these, 109 labourers were employed on the Eketahuna-Woodville railway, and 6 artisans and 131 labourers on the southern end of the North Island Main Trunk Railway. During April also 135 married and 105 single unemployed were assisted by the Department of Labour, nearly all of them being labourers.
