THE PREMIER'S FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY.

A well-attended meeting was held in the Exchange Buildings on Tuesday to consider the subject of making a presentation to the Premier (the Hon JR.. J. Seddon), on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday, on the 22nd of June next. The Mayor (Mr C. M. Luke) was unable to be present, and in his absence Mr C. W. Tanner was voted to the chair. The proposal was taken up with great heartiness ; a draft address was submitted and approved, and it was decided to have it engrossed by Mr J. R. Ingram, in tho same form as that presented to Sir George Grey on his eightieth birthday. The signatures which will be obtained to the address will be bound in album form, the covers of which it is proposed shall be made of New Zealand woods, and it is probable that the presentation will be made at a public meeting called for the occasion.

The following gentlemen were elected a committee to cany out the project:— Messrs C. W. Tanner, T. Turnbull, A. Collins, A. Ward, Maxwell, Hatchard, Kermod, J. O'Dea, Brooks, Green, A. A. Barnett, W. Miller, D. Olliver, Donovan and Lynch, with power to add to their number. Mr A. A. Barnett was elected treasurer, and Mr W. Miller undertook to carry out the duties of hon secretary for the time being. The meeting was adjourned till Wednesday in next week, at a time and place to be fixed later on.

The opinion was expressed that the occasion was decidedly opportune for the citizens of Wellington to mark their respect and esteem for Mr Seddon in some practical manner, and that it would be appreciated by him and urge him on to continue in the honourable career he has so long been engaged in. All those present pledged themselves to do their utmost to make the presentation a thoroughly representative one, and it was hoped that it would be a credit to the citizens, to the Premier, and the party he represents.
