RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB'S HACK . MEETING-. The above club enjoyed splendid weather for their race meeting yesterday, and the attendance was very large, numbering fully 1500 people, the special train from Wellington being crowded. • The meeting was admirably carried out, although the accommodation provided for the officials is still very primitive. Murtagh's starting machine was ■worked very satisfactorily by Mr Hori Te Waru, the punctuality which was strictly observed all day being principally due to the absence of delays at the starting posts. A feature of the day's sport was the large number of horses that competed in each race, and the excellent finishes proved the correctness of Mr J. E. Henry's handicaps. A number of mishaps occurred in the hurdle races, due principally to the construction of the hurdles, which, are placed on* "feet," <and when any of the leading horses struck the hurdles they tipped up the " feet," and the horses just behind had a very awkward obstacle to negotiate. However, those jockeys who did receive falls fortunately escaped with only a severe shaking. This class of hurdle should be abolished, or a serious accident may have to be recorded.

During the day Mr Joseph. Ames and his assistants put through the totalisators the sum of <£3382. The following aro the results of the racing : Trial Handicap, of 40 sovs ; second 10 sovs from stakes. Six furlongs. 72 Mr F. Before the start Mairua bolted once round, and pulled up sore. From a good start Kahurangi, Voltigeur and The Miser were first to show out. Passing the stand Kahurangi, Vigil, Voltigeur, Slaiden and Princess Cole were nearly abreast, just clear of the field. Going along the back, Slaiden shot out from the field and established a lead of nearly three lengths, Man-o'-War, Finesse and Vigil being at the head of the next division. Just before turning into the straight, The Miser showed out, and was.immediately followed by Finesse, Docility and Tangaroa. WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING. • Wanganui, May 24. The weather was rather dull, but not wet, for the Wanganui Steeplechase Meeting. Spills were frequent, but only one jockey was seriously hurt, A. Stall, the rider of Dante, in the Final Steeplechase, who received slight concussion of the brain. In the Hack Race a protest was entered that the horse had not been trained by a licensed trainer-, but was not upheld. The following are the results: — Flying Stakes Handicap, of 50 sovs. Six furlongs. 312 Mr McGuinness' b h Waiuku, syrs, by St. Lee-er —Musket Maid, Sst 51b (E. Russell) 1 121 Orion, Bst lib ... The other starters were: —55 Awarua, 9st 111 b; 30 Unity, 9stlolb; 114 Norton, 13st; 57 Busaco, 13st; 59 Morag; 155 Rangipai. The field got away to a good start and shortly afterwards the colours of Unity were seen in front, followed by Tiritea, Awarua, Booties, Norton and Busaco, all the horses taking the fences well, except Rangipai, who blundered at the hurdle in front of the stand and fell at the next obstacle. Hall quickly remounted, only to come to grief before his horse had got much further on the journey. Going down through the course Booties had assumed command, with Tiritea on his quarters, then Unity, Morag, Belle, Norton and Busaco. The gorse jump at the bottom of the course brought Morag to grief, and Busaco also came a cropper. Norton moved up, and Tiritea, jumping faultlessly, still kept in front with Booties handy. As they came through the cricket ground Tiritea's colours were seen in front, and although Gillett rode Booties all he knew how, Tiritea had a bit to spare and landed the victory by a couple of lengths, Belle about same distance away third, followed by Awarua, Norton and Unity. Time, 6min 45sec. Dividend, .£3 18s. Hunters' Steeplechase, of 60 sovs. About three miles. 176 Mr J. E. Nugent's r g Amalgam, by Natator—Quicksilver mare, 12st (Jackson) 1 101 Seddon, list 61b ... (Russell) 3 "The other starters were : —93 Monte Carlo, Bst; 94 Prioress, 7st 81b ; 182 Lorelei, 7st lib. This was a most interesting race. Prioress was first away, followed by Waiuku, almost pulling the boy out of the saddle, the rest of the field in a cluster. Going round the bend Waiuku was left in the lead, but Lorelei ran to the front and flattered her backers for a time. Rounding the bend The Artist and Irish Twist went up, passed the leaders and raced into the straight, a slashing finish ending in favour of Irish Twist. Dividend, £5 lis. The Dunedin Jockey Club's; May Meeting was favoured with fine Weather. The attendance was better than usual at the May Meeting, and the racing was very interesting. The sum of .£4812 was put through the totalisator, which is slightly more than the amount last year for the same day. The results of the racing, the investments being given for the £1 totalisator only, are as follow : Maiden Plate, of 50 sovs. One mile and a quarter. 205 Mr Douglas' b c Marino, 3yrs, by Nelson—Waitiri ... The gap was lessened in the next two furlongs, and Esparto ranged alongside Casket, and at the three-furlong post forged ahead. Near the entrance to the straight Saracen, who had drawn away from Outpost, was third, and half way up was called upon ; but as.he did not respond Esparto's victory seemed certain, until in the last few strides Saracen dashed to the front and won by a nose from Esparto, who beat Casket by a length, while Outpost was several lengths away. There was a fine attendance, and good racing. Speculation was again brisk, and the inauguration of the 10s totalisator appeared to give general satisfaction. The sum of .£5224 10s was put through the machine, making a total of .£10,038, or .£8 more than last year. During the'day Mr Sherwin, owner of Barmby, asked the stewards to hold an enquiry into the running of Barmby, ridden by Brown in the Tradesmen's Handicap on the previous day, with a view of having no trouble in connection with the Consolation Handicap. The stewards had nothing before them, and did hot hold the enquiry; but when Barmby won the Consolation Sta.kes very comfortably, they of their own initiative held an enquiry. Brown's explanation that the horse was slipping about a good deal was not deemed satisfactory, and the stakes in the Consolation Handicap, in which Barmby was ridden by Clarke, were awarded to Goodwood, the second horse, and it was decided to disqualify Brown for 12 months. As no notice of protest was posted it is possible that some of the supporters of Goodwood tore up their tickets. : The following are the results of the racing (the individual numbers given applying only to the inside or <£l machine): — Hurdle Handicap, of 60 sovs. One mile and a half. 91 Strephon, list 21b ...
