EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held on Wednesday. 1 Present: Messrs J. E. Blair (chairman), W. A. Fitzherbert, J. Young, F. H. Fraser, F. Bradey, W. W. McCardle, W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., Dr Newman, M.H.8., and Eev J. Paterson. The Chairman reported that in conjunction with Mr Bradey he had arranged to have the children residing in the fishing village of Paremata conveyed by coach to the Pahautanui School. A member of the Bangitumau School Committee (Mr W. H. Welch) interviewed the Board as to the necessity of providing living accommodation for the female teacher at the Bangitumau School. The Board decided to have two rooms added to the school building to accommodate the I teacher.

A deputation from the Johnsonville School Committee waited on the Board and asked for assistance in p-oviding a well and pump to supply the school with water, which was now only supplied from tanks. The cost would be about .£lO. Mr J. Young moved that the <£lo be granted, which was seconded by Dr Newman, and carried. On the recommendation of the inspector,, it was decided to spent .£5 on drainage at Kaiwaiwai.

The Chairman reported that the committee appointed to consider the question of alleged excessive punishment at Paikakariki visited the school, and, though feeling that the position was exaggerated by local circumstances, came to the conclusion that the punishment had been somewhat excessive; and he (the chairman) desired tho Board to authorise the secretary to write to the teacher and call his attention to the regulations on the subject. This was agreed to. Miss Hamilton, Principal of the Girls' High School, reported favourably on all the scholarship holders but one. The Board decided to pay this young lady's scholarship, but to warn her as to her future conduct. The resignation of Miss Agnes Olson, Petone, was accepted. The Board decided that the elections of the chairman of the Tenui School |Committee and of the Carterton Committee as a whole were valid. Permission was granted to those teachers in the Wairarapa who intend to be present at the conversazione to be held at Masterton under the auspices of the Educational Institute to close their schools on the day of the conversazione. The Chief Inspector was authorised to place at the disposal of the Institute for the occasion any science apparatus he may have. An application by Maurice Hering for permission to attend the drawing classes free of charge, to enable him to qualify for service under the- Board, was refused; Plans for new infant schools for Petone and' Pahiatua were ordered to be ready by the next meeting of the Board. Appointments were made to the Petone, Parkvale and Mangamahoe Schools, promotion being given in each case to a teacher in the Board's service. The names will be submitted for the approval of the committee in each case.

A larger bell for the Kaitawa School was granted. Mr C. C. Hubbard was appointed to the aided school at Taratahi West, subject to a report from the inspector as to his fitness. Misses Daisy Badland and Norah Cowles were appointed pupil teachers at Waihenga and Mangatainoka respectively. The Chairman was avithorised to apply to the Government for the services of a member of tho Permanent Artillery as drill instructor at the Vogeltown School. Mr G-. H. Bethune was appointed auctioneer to dispose of the Board's lands at Otaki and Petone. The Board granted the sum of .£SO for an aided school at Keikorangi, the Wellington Small Farm Fruit Association's settlement. The Chairman reported that the bank overdraft was .£3955 72s Od. The Board, he said, would probably have some difficulty in maintaining their position until the end of the year, but they would probably recover after that.
