STRATFORD.

Stratford, May 14. Mr T. Kennedy Macdonald, of Wellington, has been up here on Government business and appears to be duly impressed with this progressive portion of the Colony. Mr Ralph, draper, Cuba street, was here yesterday inspecting the new premises erected for him by the Messrs Curtis. The Anglican Church in Stratford will hold a ** social” and gift sale in the Town Hall on the second Thursday in June. Although game is scarce in this immediate vicinity, some very heavy hags are being made some few miles in the interior. The township of Tariki is pushing ahead in civilisation. A public hall is now a burning question, and a public company has decided to erect a substantial one at once. A settler on the Pembroke road recently refused an offer of =£l3 per acre for his farm, a proof that dairying is not altogether a losing concern. The Ven Archdeacon Govett, of New Plymouth, preached to a large congregation at Holy Trinity Church, Stratford, on Sunday evening. A Stratford lady on. Sunday morning found a revolver in a bedroom occupied by a lodger. Wanting to know if the pistol was loaded she pulled the trigger and let go a large scream as the bullet whistled through the glass of the bedroom window, rebounded from a corner building and lodged in a door on the opposite side of the way. A gentleman who returned to-day from a long trip up the East road reports that the work done by the co-operative men is most excellent. The new portion of the road is well graded and 'substantially made. By Christinas it will be possible to drive a buggy for some 50 miles eastward from Stratford.
