THE URIWERA SURVEY.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. \ AucKLANp.May 19. , Lieutenant Hume and a detachment of the Permanent Artillery leave to-morrow by train for Rotorua en route for Galatea. It is understood that intelligence has been received that Natives have interfered with a survey party. We understand that there has not been “ another disturbance with the Natives at Te Whaiti ” in the Uriwera country. What has occurred is merely this : Mr Phillips, the surveyor, had finished the trig, station at Te Whaiti and was proceeding further j inland to Ruatahuna, when about 50 Natives met him on the track and took possession of his horses. They did not attempt to stop him, but as all his necessaries were on the backs of the horses he could not go on without them, and therefore turned back with the Natives. Instructions have now been wired to him to i go on again, taking a policeman with him.
