Pretoria, May 14. Majesto, the paramount chief of the neighbourhood of Zoutspanberg, in the north-east of the Transvaal, who at the head of a large force resisted coercion by the Transvaal authorities, has expelled the Transvaal Commission from his district, An expedition under General Joubert is preparing to suppress and punish the natives. The force will consist of 8000 whites and 10,000 natives. Heavy fighting is expected. Majesto’s men are armed with the latest weapons bought from Portuguese. London, May 15. A St. Petersburg telegram declares that Japan claims the right to hold Port Arthur until half the indemnity is paid, Wei-hai-wei until the whole is paid, and Corea until a settled condition prevails in the country and its independence is secured. Capetown, May 15. Complaints have been i*aised in the Cape Parliament that negotiations are being opened with Canada for a reciprocal treaty, while the importation of Australian meat is prohibited and their neighbours in the Transvaal were neglected. Mr Rhodes, the Premier, said that Canada only proposed to send delegates to the Cape, and that nothing had yet been decided about reciprocity. Valparaiso, May 19. The Chilian House of Parliament has been destroyed by fire. Incendiarism is suspected. St. John’s, May 17. The followers of Sir William Whiteway have decided to oppose Canada’s liberal terms for the union of Newfoundland with the Dominion. London, May 18. It is believed that Newfoundland will become a Crown colony.
