SOVEREIGN. The sovereign is both, an ancient and modern gold coin. In 1489, 22J pieces in value 20s, “to be called the sovereign,” were ordered to be coined. Since the establishment of paper money, £1 notes have to a certain extent taken the place of sovereigns. As much as .£SOOO sterling has been placed, in £1 orders, inside the -wrappers under the label of large bottles of Wolfe’s Schnapps, and the custom still continues. Eor this reason it is better to buy large-sized bottles, and not rely on getting the genuine liquor in any other way. 26
