A daring attempt to escape from custody was made by a man named James Eastwood on Saturday night. He had been before the Court in the evening on the charge of obtaining =£lo by false pretences from Alexander Shand, and was conveyed to the Terrace gaol in a cab in charge of Constable Whitehouse. He was not handcuffed, and immediately he got out of the cab at the gates of the gaol he bolted. Down the hill he went as fast as he could travel, with the constable in close attendance. On turning- the corner into Buller street Eastwood, suddenly stopped, and leaning against a fence threw out his leg’ for the constable to fall over. He was partially successful in his object, but Whitehouse managed to get hold of Iris prisoner’s arm, and this prevented him falling his full length, on the ground. As he fell Eastwood, it is alleged, put his foot on him and threatened him with violence if he stirred, but the constable disregarded the warning, and pulling him down managed to overcome and secure him. The recapture was a clever one, and reflects great credit on Constable White- } house.
