GREYTOWN.

The Native Land Court opened here on Wednesday last, and in consequence Maoris are pretty numerous. Hotel proprietors and keepers of billiard saloons thrive while the sitting lasts.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held on Monday evening last. His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. 1). Heagerty, in the chair. Correspondence was read Town Trust with reference to a grant of LSO towards the erection of the Matarawa bridge. The borough overdraft was reported at L 628 6s sd. Accounts to the amount of £79 0s 9d were passed for payment. A committee, consisting of His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Izard and Loasby, were appointed to carry out matters in connection with the visit of the Minister of Lands on Friday. An address of welcome will be given him on his arrival at the railway station. Considerable discussion arose over the bad state of the Borough fire wells. It was decided to have them deepened. Councillor John Fabian, in an energetic speech, pointed out that the time had arrived when a road should be taken across the Tararuas to Otaki, and so open up thousands of acres of rich pasture land for settlement now lying idle. He added that the matter should be pointed out to the Minister of Lands. The Council then adjourned. Tenders are out for the erection of Mr F. H. W ood’s new auction mart. The building will have, a frontage of 35ft and a depth of 52ft. e

A fashionable wedding took place at the Anglican Church on Wednesday morning: last. The contracting parties were MissOlive Fuller, sixth daughter of Mr John Fuller, cordial manufacturer, of this town, and Harold Welch, master of the Hunt Club’s hounds. The Eev. A. Y. Grace was. the officiating minister.

Pollard’s Liliputian Company open for a season of one night only in the Palace Hallon Friday evening next. A benefit concert was tendered to Mr Harry Thomas in the Palace Hall on Wednesday evening last. Mr Thomas is leaviug the district for Auckland.

The first meeting of the new quarter of the Grey town Mmtual Improvement Society was held in the Wesleyan schoolroom on Monday evening last, the Rev S. J. Gibson (President) in the chair. The election of officers for the ensuing quarter resulted as follows President, Rev S. 3. Gibson-Vice-Presidents, Messrs A. Worsfold and a[ Eowse ; Editor of Journal, J. K. Hornblow - Secretary and Treasurer, E. A Neilson - Committee, Misses Hall and Lewell, and Mr E. Haigh. Mi Watt, proprietor of the Foresters' Arms, has parted with his interest to Messrs Buckeridge and Birnie, and gives possession next week. The annual football matches Greytown Ist and 2nd v. Athletics Ist and second fifteens wilL be played at Wellington this year,
