THE KARRAKATTA.

H.M.S. Karrakatta arrived from the North at 4 p.m. on Monday, and anchored in the harbour. The Karrakatta is one of the Imperial Government's torpedo flotilla, built in 1889 at Elswick. Her displacement is 735 tons, and her engines are of 2500 horse-power, giving a registered speed of- 19'2 knots per hour. Her armament consists of two 4£-inch guns, four 3pounder quick firing guns, and she is fitted with three torpedo tubes.

The Karrrakatta is in command of Lieutenant J. Cuddy, and the officers with him are —Navigating lieutenant, D. C. Scott j lieutenant, H. Rogers ; Dr "Warren; chief engineer, W. Juniper; and assistant engineer, J. Cockey. The dimensions of the vessel are—Length, between perpendiculars, 230 f t; breadth, extreme, 27ft; extreme draught at keel, Bft 6in ; extreme draught at screw, 10ft 6in ; displacement in tons, 735 ; indicated horse-power, 4500 ; maximum speed (measured mile, forced draught for a short period, under favourable conditions), 21 knots an hour; maximum speed (measured mile, forced draught for a short period, under natural conditions), 18f knots an hour; coal complement, 100 tons. She is of steel throughout, and has a forecastle about 70 feet long, but no poop. The engines are vertical triple expansion with a maximum indicated horse-power of 4500, with forced draught. This, it is estimated, gives a measured mile speed of 21 knots, and the speed with unclosed stoke-holes about 18f knots. The complement of officers and men is 80.

The ship is provided with an electric search light, fitted on the bridge forward, and also with a yard-arm reflector, containing eight incandescent lamps. This reflector is portable, so that it can be suspended where required. One dynamo is provided for generating current for these lights. A display of the search light was given on Tuesday evening.
