THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

A conference of local bodies interested in the carrying out of the new dairy regulations was held at the Council Chamber on Thursday afternoon. The delegates from local bodies present were—The Mayor of Wellington and Councillor Harris, the Mayor of Onslow (Mr H. M. McCarthy), Mayor of the Lower Hutt (Mr W. A. Fitzherbert), Councillor Burridge (Petone), Councillor Lewer (Karori), Councillor Speedy (Hutt County Council), Mr Coofe (Makara), and Mr E. H. Beere fSeatoun). The borough of Melrose and Johnsonvilla were not represented. The chief subject for discussion was the appointment of an inspector, and after con* sidering whether a medical man or a veterinary surgeon should be appointed, the Conference decided to invite applications from persons having a practical knowledge of dairy farming and cattle generally. Applications will be invited at once, and must be sent in by the next meeting of the Conference, which will be held on April 4th. The salary to ba offered was fixed at £225 per annum, tha inspector to pay his own expenses. It was decided that the Mayor of Wellington should be empowered to deal with any minor matters in oonneotion with tha carrying out of the regulations, and to advertise that all dairymen and milk: vendors must apply for registration forthwith.
