When the flag fell King Cannibal's and The Dancer's colours were most prominent, but this pair were soon brought back, and Planet took up the running into the straight, with The Dancer and Goosander lying next; then came Scot Free and Dreamland. As the field swept past the stand, Scot Free and Planet were slightly in front of The Dancer, the rest bunched, withjthe exception of North Atlantic, who was a couple of lengths behind his field. At the town bend Scot Free was carrying the field along at a fair pace, Planet still lying second. In the back stretch the field began to close up, and at the turn into the straight North Atlantic shot by everything, leaving his field as though they were standing, and coming on full of running won by at loast three lengths, hard held. Several accidents occurred during the day. In the Trial Hurdles Nightshade fell at the first jump, and Donovan, the jockey, suffered slight concussion of the brain, but has since recovered. In the same race Moa fell, and Cuneen, his jockey, had his collarbone broken. In the last race going round the hill bend, Stepfeldt collided with Pompom, and both fell. Gallagher, the rider of Stepfeldt, was badly smashed up, and has a broken collarbone and internal injuries. He was removed to the Hospital and recovered consciousness, but the extent of his injuries are not yet known, and the worst is feared. Ray nor, who rode Pompom, escaped uninjured. Bidwill (chairman), G. R. Bidwill, W. J. Nix, A. M. Wilkinson, J. S. Cundy, Fred. Pearce, G. Reynolds, H. Morrison, R. Bright and W. O. Williams. The tender of Mr A. Jones for the grand stand luncheon booth, for the coming meeting, was accepted. The matter of the concrete culvert was referred to the chairman. The enquiry into the breaking of a lock on the gate of the Maroa . : . course was resumed, and at length the stewards resolved to meet in Greytown on Wednesday next, and have all present who are concerned in the matter so that the matter can be dealt with finally. After the meeting the stewards went to '.:: the course, where two starting machines were tried—that of Messrs Bright and Morrison, and another exhibited by Mr Lewis, of GreytOwn. Mr Lewis' machine consists of two posts with two silk elastic tapes stretched across, both tapes being liberated at the one time and shoot across to the opposite side. . The other machine consisted of two posts with arms which have tapes stretched across, the arms being connected with strong rubber, which acts as springs, and takes the tapes from in front of the horses upwards. Some very good ' starting was made with both machines, there being about twelve horses oh the \ track. Messrs Bright and Morrison gave a prize of 10s to the horse which started by their machine and made the first fifty yards. This race was won by Voltaire. Mr Lewis then offered a prize for the first, second and third horses- started by his machine and going the same distance as the others, Voltaire again winning, with Jumbo (ridden by Voltaire's owner, W. A. Donald) second.

DUNEDIN ANNIVERSARY MEETING. * Dunedin, March 23. The, weather was hleak and cold for the Duhedin Jockey Club's races to-day. The course was heavy from the two days' previous rain, and the attendance was rather below the average. The total investments for the day was .£2282, which is less than last year's total.
