LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
The Government have just acquired under the Land for Settlements Act from Elder, Smith and Co. the Merivale estate, of 9998 acres, in Western Southland. It is situated on the main road to the Waiau near the Clifton Ferry, where a large iron bridge is to be, constructed across the Waiau. The estate is described as mixed agricultural and pastoral, with a small quantity of forest. The soil rests upon limestone, and is nearly all suitable for farms of from 200 to 320 acres. Fencing: material, firewood and milling timber are abundant, and there is good building stone in the vicinity. For the most part the property is well grassed with English grasses, and is perhaps better adapted for sheep farming or cattle grazing than for cropping. There is a plentiful supply of good water, and there is shelter in all weathera for stock. Possession will be given to the Crown about the middle of next month, and arrangements have already been made to out up the estate into areas suitable for dairy farms. These will be opened for selection .in about three months, the tenure to'be lease in perpetuity.
