London, March 6.
Port of Spain, capital of the island of Trinidad, a town of 20,000 people, has been partly destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at ? half a million sterling. [Port of Spain is one of the finest towns in the West Indies. lb was originally built of wood, but was burned down in 1808, and was then rebuilt of stone. The streets are wide, well-paved, clean, and studded with trees.] Capetown, March 6. France has seized Nooswey Island, Madagascar. Cairo, March 8. It is asserted that the natives in the city are secretly purchasing arms ; but the British authorities are taking measures to combat and suppress any rising. Pretoria, March 9. A Transvaal forco of burghers, 1000 strong, is encamped on the Swaziland border, and has summoned the King of the latter territory to be installed paramount chief, or otherwise to be deposed.
