The harbourmaster (Mr John Holliday) in his annual report says that the various duties in the harbour, at the Heads and Signal Stations, have been attended to in a satisfactory manner -without accident or less. Fourteen vessels with a net tonnage of 11,641 were piloted into port; one vessel of 2429 tons piloted out, and 281 vessels with a net tonnage of 572,461 tons were removed, the total number of vessels handled by the pilots being 296, with a net tonnage of 586,531 tons, giving an increase of three ■ vessels and 82,258 tons on the previous year. Tie mentions that the change made in the pilot service at the Heads last July, by removing the inward pilot to town, and the arrangement made with the owner of the s.s. Duco, for placing the pilot on board ships when required, is working satisfactorily. In reference to the pilot service the Board’s engineer in his report states that the new arrangement has worked well, and it has prevented the loss which had existed in the pilotage department for the previous two and a half years. , , The Public Works Committee decided on Monday to recommend to the City Council: “ That the Commissioner of Crown Lands be informed that the Council •does not Bee its way to furnish the information asked for with reference to the proposed Fair Rent Bill."
