The quarterly meeting of the City Licensing Committee was held at noon on Friday. Present —Messrs J. C. Martin, S.M. (chairman), J. Young, E. "W. Mills, T. W. McKenzie, J. B. Harcourt, J. Heaton, J. Smith, F. de J. Clere and the Bey H. Yan Staveren. The clerk (Mr W. P. James) said there was nothing in the police report. Applications for transfers were granted as follow :—Mary Blackey to James Thomas Cray, Shamrock Hotel ; Michael Hodgins to C. W. Chandler, Princess Hotel; Walter C. Wilson to John O’Kane, Grosvenor Hotel (Mr Skerrett for the applicant). The following applications for transfers were withdrawn : James Meyrick to Henry F. Jones, Queen’s Hotel; James Briggs to Ferdinand Fahrenback, Albert Hotel. In answer to the chairman Sergeant-Major Bamsay stated that certain required alterations at the Hag’s Head Hotel, which were referred to at the last meeting of the committee, had been attended to. The committee then adjourned. The claims received by the Harbour Board last year for investigation amounted to <£295 3s, and the amount paid was <£7B 17s 6d.

During the hearing of some cases under the Shops and Shop Assistants Act in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday, Mr Martin, S.M., adversely commented on the fact that the department was not represented by counsel, and that the Inspector had to conduct the cases himself.
