ATHLETICS.

AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

In many respects the thirteenth sports meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, held last Saturday at the Basin Reserve, was the best the Club has yet held. The weather promised to be wet, but fortunately held up, although the rain of the previous night and Saturday morning made the ground a little heavy for the competitor's. The presence of several athletes from other parts of the Colony increased the interest in the gathering, and their successes .were received with general satisfaction. The handicapping came in for special commendation, the finishes in the long distance events and the Bicycle Races being close and in many cases most ©3£citin g. The arrangements generally were up to date, but we would suggest that a new board should be erected on which to place the names of those starting in the different events. Last Saturday on several occasions a number of those who had entered were scratched, and until a race was well nigh over the public had no very clear idea as to who was starting and who had dropped out. To Mr MeCardell more than a passing word is due, for in hi? position as secretary he had everything well under control, and he also shared with Mr Kreeft the arduous duties of handicapping the pedestrian events. Messrs Wright and McQuistan must also be complimented on their handicaps in the bicycle races, the finishes in every instance being close and the events well contested. . ,

The attendance of the public was estimated at between 1500 and 1800. The Garrison Band" was on the ground, and played excellent music. Afternoon tea was supplied in the grandstand.

It will be seen that one record was established during the day, i.e., by McCormack, in the hammer throwing, and the Club intend to apply to the New Zealand Association to have it recognised. As is usual the representatives of the press received the greatest courtesy from the officials, a special word of thanks being due to Mr C. J. Cooper, who was ever ready to give the fullest information regarding starters, &c. 100yds Junior Handicap. —First heat —A. J. Parry, 17yds, 1; M. G. Dodwell, 4yds, 2; L. E. Masters, 4yds, 3. Muir ... ... ... l L. T. Herbert 2 . H. G. Smith ... ... ... 3 Also started—F. Fabian, J. O. Shorland (Christchurch), A. H. Hunt and W. Chegwidden. Shorland went off with a strong lead, and held it for three miles, when Smith, who was evidently in great fettle, passed him. Smith led for a lap, when he was again passed by Shorland. The fifteenth lap saw Smith again in front, but only to be passed by Shorland again in the 18th lap. Muir and Herbert had meanwhile ridden a patient race, keeping both Shorland and Smith well in hand, and in the 19th lap Muir made one of the finest efforts he has ever made, and. passing both men won all out in great style. Herbert, Smith and Shorland; hacT a good battle for a while for places, but the former had most left in him, and finally beat Shorland and Smith somewhat; easily for second place. Hunt dropped out of the race at the end of the first mile, Fabian at on 9 mile and three-quarters, and Chegwidden at two miles. Herbert rode on a machine which he* only succeeded’.ltt borrowing a few minutes before the race started, and was somewhat handicapped in consequence. Time for the five miles, 16min 23 3rssec.

Whitcombe, 50yds; C. H. Gordon, 60yds; and E. J. Archibald, 100yds. Archibald only ran a quarter of a mile, when he stopped, leaving Gordon with the lead, which he held till threequarters of the distance had been covered. Here Clark displaced him, and looked all over a winner, but Anderson, running in the gamest style imaginable, just caught him a yard from home and won on the tape. The others were some distance off. Time, 4min 45 l-ssec. One-mile Walk Handicap. W. Talbut, scr ... ... ... 1 A. J. Patrick, 100yds ... ... -2 F. C. Angell, 100yds; and P. Clark, 100yds, also started. This event was a decided fiasco, for none of the competitors except Talbut appeared to have tha slightest idea of how to walk. Angell started in his ordinary clothes, and he and Clark only went about 200yds ’ and then stopped. Patrick, notwithstanding all sorts of “ barrack " from the crowd, went the full distance, his time being probably the worst on record. Talbut did the mile in 7min44 4-ssec. 250yds Handicap. —First heat—F. H. Harley, 18yds, 1; P. J. Nathan, 4yds, 2. Also started—J. G. Roache, 14yds; T. W. McKinlay, 16yds. Time, 27 3-ssec. Jessup, 250yd.3. This race was a gift to the limit men, who led alternately throughout. Time, 6min 13 -3-ssec. - Throwing the Hammer. Only O. McCormack entered for this event, and he Jbad three throws. His first was 104 ft, the second 106 ft lOin, and the third time he put it 106 ft lO.Vin, thus establishing a new record for New Zealand. The previous record was 100 ft 3in, also put up by McCormack. At the Championship Meeting in Napier last week Louisson, the winner of the hammer throwing, only put up 75ft 7in, so that it will be seen wlrnt a certainty the event would have been for Wellington had McCormack been able to compete. Time, 63 4-ssec. “Three-mile Bicycle Handicap. F. B. Muir, 60yds ... ... 1 J. O. Shorland (Canterbury), 80yds behind scr ... ... 2 T. M. Lucy, scr... ... ... 3 Other starters—L. T. Herbert, scr ; A. H. Hunt, 120yds; H. G. Smith, 250yds; W. Ghegwidden, 260yds; D. Brand, 220yds ; A, Nicol, 320yds. This was a magnificent race throughout. The men were in a bunch for one mile and three-quarters, when someone rang the bell, and the men thinking they only had another lap to go spurted tremendously in the eighth lap, iShorland being first past the post. The however, were in time to let the anen know they had another mile to travel, but the efforts made by several of the competitors spoiled their chances. Notwithstanding this one of the best finishes of the day was seen between Muir and . Shorland. The last lap was fought out by them with the greatest determination, and up he straight for the last time they were riding almost level. Five yards from home it was cither’s race, but Muir pedalling all he knew, just snatched victory from Shorland in the last foot, the judge’s verdict being “Muir first by six inches.” Both first and second men were loudly cheered for their fine riding, and well they deserved it. Time, 9min 6 2-ssec. 440yds Handicap (Ladies’ Bracelet). A. J. Patrick, 26yds 1 O. McCormack, 32yds ... ... 2 R. Gore, 28yds 3 Also ran —A. M. Stuart, 10yds; F. PownaU, 22yds; J. G. From the start Goldie rushed to the front and running as if he had only 50 yards to go took the field along at a great pace. At the entrance to the straight the field closed on him and he fell back beaten. A good finish saw Patrick just get home by about a yard. . Time, 51 4-ssec.

Four championship events in connection with the Amateur Athletic Club were run on the Basin Reserve on the 6th at the conclusion of the drapers’ sports. The results were as follow: — 120yds Hurdles. R. Gore ... ... ... - ... 1 C. Gore ... ... ... ••• 2 G. Johnston ... 3 Won by a foot. Time, lYsec. One-mile Flat. Clark ... 1 H. G. Anderson 2 F.Angell 3 Goldie also started. This was a very good race. After three-quarters of a mile had been travelled Clark had a good lead, which he increased as they went round the last time. Hearing the straight, however, Anderson made a determined effort to catch him, but Clark held his own to the finish, and won by' a few yards. Time, 4min 49 l-ssec. Quarter - mile Flat. A. M. Stuart ... ... ... 1 F. Harley ... ... ... 2 J. Roache ... ... ... 3 Stuart led throughout, winning easily by several yards. 100yds Flat. P. J. Nathan ... 1 O. McCormack ... ... ... 2 W. F. Larkin ... : ... 3 F. Harley, G. Johnston and R. Gore also started. There was some delay in starting this event owing to the encroachment of the public, who lined up on both sides of the track. Nathan won by about three yards, McCormack beating Larkin for second place by a yard. Time, 10 3-ssec. Christchurch, March 5. At a meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-night, it was resolved to ask the Auckland Club and the Association’s local officer to hold a joint enquiry into the alleged misconduct of certain Auckland Club members. Mr Logan, at Napier, and Mr Knapp, the local officer at Wellington, are also asked to hold an enquiry, and the secretary of the Association to take evidence at Christchurch. Votes of thanks, were passed to the officials at the Napier meeting. The Association’s representative reported that the receipts of the meeting were £268 11s and the expenditure about <£2oo.
