The charge against the young man Albert Fernandez, of stealing a watch, value £7, the property of George R. Hart, cook on board the s.s. Aorere, was to have come on for hearing at the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. Messrs E. T. Gillon and W. C. Gasquoine, Justices, attended, and, after waiting half an hour, were informed that accused had gone with Detective Campbell to show him where the watch was to be found, and had not yet returned. The case was accordingly adjourned, Mr Gillon remarking that he did not see why the Bench should, have been kept waiting half an hour for the convenience of the accused and the detective. The case was partially heard in the afternoon, when Messrs C. T. Richardson and G. H. Harbroe, Justices, occupied the Bench. Mr Tripp appeared for the accused. Hart stated that before Christmas last he gave accused the watch to clean, and on receiving it found it did not keep good time. He therefore let him have it back again to regulate and told him he should be away about six weeks. He again applied for it in about a month’s time, and was told to call again, but when he finally went to the shop he found it closed. That morning accused told him the watch was at Mr Zachariah’s shop. He was not aware that Zachariah had taken over the accused’s business. The case was then adjourned until Friday afternoon, bail being fixed in two sureties of £2O each and. accused in a like sum.
