THE WEREROA LICENSE QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR.

r Sir, Under the above heading in The Times of the sth, a correspondent writes that at a meeting held in the Levin Town Hall on Saturday last “ resolutions were then carried unanimously declaring the meeting in favour of the transfer from Manakau to Wereroa, and strongly condemning the action the Government are taking in the matter.” Your correspondent must be either wilfully stating an untruth, or else was at the meeting with his eyes shut, for the show of hands in favour of the resolutions was far from unanimous. The meeting was not at all representative, s?s half the people of the district had no idea that such a meeting was called. The first resolution which was proposed in favour of the transfer of the license was carried by a majority of about five to four, which is not veiy unanimous. The second resolution, condemning' the Government, &c. s was then proposed, and undoubtedly rejected by at least 5 to 4, although the chairman, who was evidently there prepared to pass any resolution that might be brought forward in favour of the license transfer, declared “ The ayes have it.” |As a disinterested spectator, I have no hesitation in saying that the meeting was a farce, the audience being chiefly composed of Mr P. Bartholomew’s employees, who came there to back him up in any resolution he might directly or indirectly bring forward, and to cry .down anyone who might have the temerity to stand up and say a word against the transfer.—l am Ac., * Levin, March 6th!
