Mr J. F. Mereier, organising agent for the New Zealand Workers' Union, has had an interview with the Hon Mr Carroll on the subject of establishing a branch of the union for the Maori shearers in Hawke's Bay. Mr Carroll promised to consider the matter and is to be supplied with copies of the rules, etc. He suggested thai; an agent speaking the Maori language should be employed to go amongst the Natives and deliver addresses explaining the; Union and its objects. Probably the largest species of spider known to entomologists make its home in the most mountainous regions of Ceylon. It spins a huge net of yellow silk, sometimes 10ft wide. "With one or two trifling exceptions, the submarine cables of the world, which stretch over 120,000 nautical miles, and have cost £40,000,000, are of British construction.
