FIRES.
About a quarter past 12 o'clock yesterday morning a fire was discovered at some workshops owned "and occupied by Mr P. Ahradsen, cabinetmaker, and upholsterer, at the rear of his business premises in Tory street. The buildings burnt briskly for a while, butr the-, Fire .. Brigade, aided by a good.. supply of "water,., soon. succeeded in the flames. The two workshops, .with contents,, consisting of a quantity of tools, three ease© of American chairs, and some partially finished work were very considerably damaged, and the loss is roughly estimated at about £l2O. The workshops were closed about 5 as thero.was no fire anywhere near, the cause of the outbreak is a mystery.- There—was no insurance either on the building or contents. About 8 p.m. Wednesday a fire occurred! in an eight-roomed house in Buckle street, owned oy Mr J. Nicol,. and occupied by Staff-Captain Edwards, of the Salvation Army. The flames were' extinguished by Mr George Finn, a passer-by, before much, damage was done. -: The Fire Brigade turned out, but their services were not required.' The damage is estimated at between £5 and .£6.; Mr W. Osborne's house at Aorangi was totally destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. Very, little v was" saved. The house was insured in the Sun Office for £IOO, but there;was no insurance on the furniture.
