Although three mining scholarships providing for three years' free tuition at the Otago University College were offered this year by the Government for competition by candidates from any part of the Colony, only two candidates entered, viz., J. McLaren, of the Thames School of Mines, and John W. Lee, of the Reefton School, Mr McLaren passed with signal credit, and has obtained a scholarship. His marks ranged from 75 to 92 per cent., and averaged 80'5 for the different subjects of examination. Mr Lee's marks ranged from 20 to 93 per cent., and his average was 60*75 per cent.
