BANKRUPTCY.

A bankrupt stated on Friday to th« Official Assignee that "he was paying 12s per month interest on a bailment of .£l2 on his furniture. Mr Ashcroft pointed out that this was equal to .60 per cent, per annum, which he considered monstrous. He said it was a pity that there was not some kind of an institution here similar to the Mont de Piete of the Continent, where workmen and others could get; small Joans at a reasonable rate of interest.

An informal meeting of creditors in the estate of James Briggs, hotelkeeper, was held on Monday afternoon in the Official Assignee's office, Mr J. Ashcroft, presiding. Mr Poynton appeared for the debtor, who, in his written statement, said that he took the Albert Hotel about two years and ten months ago. It never paid from the start. He paid .£BSO cash for the goodwill and furniture. His wife died during his tenancy, and her long illness interfered with the business. • His bankruptcy was not due to any fault of his own, as he honestly did his best to make the hotel pay, but was not successful. Mr Ashcroft said there was. only one creditor present, and he would adjourn the meeting until Monday next at 3 p.m. As far as he could see there were no available assets, as Castendyk and Focke had a bill-of-sale over everything.
