LATEST LONDON FASHIONS.

From Our Own Correspondent. Eegent street, December 29. Though hat crowns are so much higher and more defined the felt '*•• plateau " hats, which were much used two or'three years back, are Wing revived. The plateau being simply a circular piece of felt, absolutely guiltless of crown of any kind, would appear a contradiction to the raising of crowns, but it is so turned, twisted, and trimmed, as to give the' height now demanded. Fig. 1 is a case in point, and was sketched from a very stylish model just recently seen. Golden brown of a pretty pale shade was the colour of the plateau, which was rolled back from the face, and

so manipulated as to form various undulations at the back. Straps and loops of bronze-green velvet brought over the front to the centre —where the crown would be did it exist—formed the trimming, grouped with a profusion of pale golden-brown ostrich tips. Theatre jackets have become quite an institution of late, and seem as popular as tea gowns and tea jackets. They are certainly very convenient for those who live in distant suburbs for instance, and do not care to don a thorough evening gown entire to travel in; as one of these pretty jackets or bodices can be worn with a black silk or satin skirt and a dressy appearance attained without inconvenience or trouble. In Fig. 21 give an elegant bodice of this description of black lace and shellpink satin. The bodice, it will be seen, is gathered fully at the thfoat and waist, the former being finished by a very deep, full,

" Toby" frill of the black lace ; and the latter terminating in a short basque of the same beneath the waistband, which, with

We must certainly congratulate ourselves on the lovely weather we have had this summer. If there is anything to be complained of it isthe exceptional heat we have experienced during the past few weeks.* After the arduous household duties have been attended to is it any wonder, that all ladies relish a cup of "Matchless Brand Tea"—it is-simply delicious. the straps, which pass from under the frill and end in loops over the ba3que, is of shell-pink satin ribbon. The sleeves are of satin with black lace ruffles. This dainty bodice can be made with ease and very little expense at home (by those who cannot afford to invest at a modiste's) by drawing the lace (cut blouse fashion) over a close fitting bodice lining of pale pink sateen.

Fig. 3 is a charming though very simple design, employing the new bouche material, the lines of which run across instead of down. The bodice is made to fasten at the back over a vest piece and

collar of velvet, edged with passementerie ; the balloon top of sleeve? and Avaist piece being also of velvet. The wrists and edge of the skirt have a line of passementerie, and the colouring us a rich green, with velvet a shade darker. Golf capes seem to be a mania just now, though, why " golf," histoiw recordeth not; as no golfer, or' "goffer" (as the smart appear to pronounce it) would be muffled and hampered by a cape whilst playing ; and if the cape is simply worn to and\ from the scene of action any other wrap might as well claim the distinctive name. The " Golf" cape is a half length, made sometimes with a shorter one over it to just below the shoulders, but not always made double. A turnover collar, strap fasten, and plaid lining are the remaining principal features, and the material is usually a heavy tweed. j KoSELLE.
