THE COLONY'S POPULATION.
The estimated population or the Colony, exclusive of Maoris, on December 31st last was 686,128, or 363,763 males and 322,365 females. The population on December 31st, 1893, was 672,265, thus showing a gain of 13,863 during the year. Including Maoris, the population of the Colony on December 31st last amounted to 728,121. . There were 18,528 births registered last year, and 6918 deaths, the excess of births over deaths being 11,610. The arrivals in the Colony during lasC year numbered 25,237, and the departures 22,984, giving a gain of 2253 persons. The Chinese population in New Zealand at the end of last year was estimated at 4145 persons, of whom 16 were females. The European population of the Colony increased during the year at the rate of 206 per cent., the rate for the previous year being 3'36 per cent, for 1892, 2*58, and for 1891, 137 per cent. The birth-rate Colony in 1894 was 27*28 per 1000 of the; mean population, exclusive of Maoris ; and the death-rate 10'19 ; as against 27'50 andilO'2'3 respectively in 1893.
