CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last week. Present—Tho Mayor (in the chair), and Councillors Anderson, Harris, Willeston, Myers, Frasor, Penty, Petherick, Tanner, Barber, Tatum, Devine and Barber. RUSSELL TERRACE. A deputation consisting of residents of Russell terrace waited on the Council to ask that something should be done to the watercourse flowing through the terrace, which it was said took the drainage of all the houses there, besides all the storm water. Two cases of typhoid fever had occurred there. The road was also in a very incomplete state. The Mayor replied that the matter would be carefully enquired into by the Council, and no dovibt relief would be afforded if possible The Town Clerk read a report on these two cases of typhoid fever, one was that of a boy who said he had been watching men working on a drain, and the other was that of a young man who had been working at Miramar, and who, it was supposed, had been drinking impure water. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. THOMPSON STREET. MrE. Tonks wrote offering to remove tho earth from the reserve at the top of Thompson street at any depth or level the Council might advise, and to sow the same in grass free of charge. Tho matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. UPPER ADELAIDE ROAD. Mr T. Stephens wrote saying that some attention was urgently needed to the channelling in the Upper Adelaide road. Councillor Tatum moved that the matter be referred to the City Surveyor to report to the next meeting of the Public Works Committee. This was seconded by Councillor Fraser, and carried. A LETTER PROM CANADA. Mr P. 11. Smith, writing from Canada, asked what opening there was for a stove and machinery business in New Zealand. The Council decided to send him a copy of the New Zealand Year Book for 1894. LIBRARY COMMITTEE. This committee recommended:—That tho following donations be acknowledged with thanks :—Mr J. H. Lankshear, Milton's Poems; Miss E. E. M. Montgomery, "Songs of tho Singing Shepherd"; Survey Department, maps. That leave of absence be granted to Miss Mowatt for two weeks from February 27th, and to Mr Baggett for two weeks from March 14th. Tho report was adopted. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The report of this committee, which has already been published, was then considered. Clauses 7 and 8 wore referred back to the committee. They are as follow: —"That Mr J. Bruce be referred to the former letter sent him with reference to the work asked for at St. John street," and "That the request of Mr A. Boardman to be relieved from carrying out the incompleted work at Karori street be not complied with."

In regard to clause 17, " That a crossing be laid from the corner of Cambridge terrace and Courtenay place to the foot of Majoribanks street," Councillor Harris moved that the cost of the work bo first ascertained. Councillor Petherick seconded the motion, which was, however, eventually withdrawn, and the clause was passed. Tho other clauses were adopted without amendment. DRAINAGE CONNECTIONS. The Council then wont into committee. When the Council resumed, the Mayor said the committee had dealt with 11 applications for making drainage connections under the deferred payment system. The Committee recommended that eight of those should be granted and three refused, and the recommendation was adopted.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to .£ll,lßl 13s 3d were passed for payment. The Council then rose, several motions, of which notice had been given, beingfleft; over until the next meeting. *s
