WELLINGTON SOCIAL GOSSIP.

Wellington, February 6. Last Tuesday afternoon Lady Glasgow entertained about three hundred members of the Mothers’ Union at Government House. A large marquee was erected in front of the house oil the lawn, in which tea, cakes, and all sorts of good things were to be had. Later in the afternoon everybody adjourned to the large ballroom, where Lady Glasgow gave a very instructive and pleasant little address. The Bishop of Salisbury also spoke, and in doing so praised mcst highly the good work that was being done in the Union of which Lady Glasgow is the enthusiastic and helpful leader. The Ladies Boyle (3) proved indefatigable in their efforts to entertain the guests, and afterwards performed a pretty trio for two violins and piano. Madame Merz gave much pleasure by her singing, as also did Mr W. Dav. Miss Williams presided at the piano, and it goes without saying that she did it well. Mr A. S. Paterson gave one of hia funny recitations, which caused much laughter. After singing a hymn, this pleasant little gathering broke up, as all good things are apt to do, all too soon.

Lady Glasgow and the Ladies Boyle left on Saturday morning for their overland trip up North. They made a Short stay in Marton, and were guests of Mr Arkwright. The younger members of the family are at Lowry Bay, and are, I believe, to remain there until the return of Lord and Lady Glasgow to Wellington.

Speaking of Lowry Bay reminds me of the large picnic that is to be held there on Saturday next by the Civil Service Association. It is to be hoped that it will be a fine day, as I hear that every arrangement is being made to make the affair a success.

Sir Robert and Lady Stout have, I am glad to say, decided to make Wellington their home. Both Sir Robert and Lady Stout have a great many friends here, who are glad to welcome them back again.

Several people have gone to Hawke’s Bay in order to be present at the wedding of Miss Cara Russell and Colonel Fox, which takes place to-morrow at Hastings.

Mr and Mrs A/ Pearce and Mrs (Dr) Collins, are among those who have gone, also the Misses Williams, Grace and Johnston.

Miss Hadfield is still in town. Miss Lucy Williams, of Hawke’s Bay, is also here, and is staying at Mrs T. C. Williams’, Hobson street.

I am sorry to say there is very little social nows this week, which has been unusually dull. Next week we hope to be a little more lively with the Comic Opera Company here, which, from the accounts one hears, ought to be excellent. Of course Miss Nellie Stewart was always a favourite and still continues to be.

I hear from good authority that Miss Nora Kemp, eldest daughter of Dr Kemp (who is so well known in Wellington circles, and is at present in London with his family), has become engaged to one of the professors of the University of Music, London. Miss Kemp has many friends here who will be pleased to hear of this. Violet.
