CAUGHT IN THE ACT.

Stratford, January 30. For some time past suspicion existed that cases of wines, spirits and beer were tampered with at the Stratford goods-shed. Bast night, therefore, Mr Ayre, stationmaster, and Mr Sole, a porter, kept watch in a covered truck inside the shed. At 4 this morning the door of the shed was opened, and a man walked in,went to a case, and was about to abstract some bottles when Sole flashed a lantern in his face. Mr Ayre covered the intruder with a shot-gun, told him to hold up his hands, and kept him covered while Sole fetched the policeman, who locked up the man. The prisoner is named Donald Stewart, and till lately was employed at Rowe’s livery stables. He formerly lived at Eltham. He is a man about 40 years of age. He was brought before Justices today, and remanded,
