RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. The weather was beautifully fine on Jan. 24th for the concluding day’s racing of the Wellington Summer Meeting, and in consequence there was another large attendance, about 2500 people being present, an attendance which for a non-holiday must bo very flattering to the Club. Jupp’s Private Brass Band were again on the ground and played a capital selection of music. The management of tho meeting Avas again excellent, and everything, as far as the officers of the Club and their assistants were concerned, passed off most pleasantly. An accident occurred to Moody Campbell, the rider of Black and Red in the Juvenile* Handicap, the colt fell just after the field had started, and his rider had his collarbone fractured.

Tho racing on tho 24th was of a most interesting description. Tho chief event during the afternoon, the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, resulted in the outsider of the three starters winning, in the fast time of 2min llsec for one mile and a quarter. There is no question that, in one sense, it was a falsely run race, as Rangipuhi was indulged with the lead, and at the back of the course must have been fully eight lengths in advance of Lady Zetland and Mahaki. The great effort they had to make to get on terms with Rangipuhi knocked all tho steam out of them. The riders of Mahaki and Lady Zetland cannot well be blamed for this, as their horses decisively defeated Rangipuhi in the Cup race on Tuesday, and it was accepted that • the horse was not thoroughly well. It was *? the general opinion that if they had kept their horses with Rangipuhi, Mahaki would have just about defeated him. Tho finish for the Farewell Handicap was one of the most- exciting- witnessed on the Hntt Course. Mr Evett, the Club’s li&ndicanper, scored a distinct success during- the day, for which ho deserves much credit, his adjustments being very equitable. Tho starting- onth.i 2 lib was an improvement on the first day, and taken mi tho-

whole Mr Andrew Young was very successful. With the additional experience he was more cm fait with the starting machines. Mr Ames and his staff had another bigday in the totalisator offices, putting through '£7707, as against <£6696 for the second day last year. The total investments for the Summer Meeting of 1894 amounted to .£15,616, and this year to >BIB,IBB, which leaves the substantial increase of £2572 in favour of this year. _ The large number of patrons and visitors to the Hutt Park Racecourse cannot have failed to recognise the admirable manner in which the officers of the Club and their secretary, Mr H. M. Lyon, carried out their duties, and the smoothness with which the meeting was carried out during the two days. The railway arrangements on Thursday were a distinct improvement on that which the public had to put up with on Tuesday. The following are the results: — January Handicap, of 100 sovs; second 10 sovs from the stakes* One mile and a furlong. 842 Hon J. D. Ormond’s br g North Atlantic, syrs, by Nordenfeldt— Atlantis, Bst 121 b ... (P. White) 1 43 Mr A. McKenzie’s ch h Porepo, 4yrs, 6st 71b ... (L. Mathews) 2 92 Mr A. The tapes of Crawford’s machine were released to a splendid start, Porepo being quickest to move. At the six-furlong post ho was joined by Musket, but at the back of the course the latter dropped back, and Princess May raced up to Porepo. Coming along by the road North Atlantic moved up, and White had only to let the Nordenfeldt horse have his head to enable him to win easily by a neck, Golden Plover coming with a fast run, and getting third position half a length behind Porepo. Time, lmin 57 4-ssec. Dividend, £2 3s. Hurdle Handicap, of 70 sovs ; second 10 sovs from the stakes. One mile and three-quarters. 96 Mr R. Hobbs’ b m Lady Zetland, aged, by Perkin Warbeck 11. ' Forget-Me-Not, Bst 91b (C. Cochrane) 3 From a good start Rangipuhi took up the running, and the riders of the other two horses being content with a waiting race he established about eight lengths lead down the back stretch. Approaching the four-furlong post, Mahaki and Lady Zetland went in pursuit and both were ridden hard. Mahaki succeeded in get- ' ting up to Rangipuhi, but the effort had been too much, and Rangipuhi had only to be shaken up to win by half a length, Lady Zetland a length away. Time, 2min llsec. Dividend, £3 ss. Winners op Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a quarter.

Previous to 1889-90 the distance was one mile and three-quarters.

The youngsters were very restive at the post, and caused some delay, but eventually they were despatched to a fairly good start. Dissenter was slow to move, and in the scramble getting away, Black and Bed fell, and his rider, Moody Campbell, had his collarbone fractured. St. John and Heavenly Twin were in the lead, with Spruce and Warnote next, and landed in the straight*togcther, an exciting finish terminating in a head victory fer St. John,Warnote a length away just defeating Spruce for third position. The tapes of Gray’s machine were released to a fairly good start. Porepo was first away, and Searchlight was slow to move. At the top turn King’s Bowman was leading, Porepo having dropped back. Coming along the side Spindrift, Saracen and Britomarte were abreast, just behind King’s Bowman, and when round the turn Saracen shot out, and King’s Bowman dropping back Britomarte put in a claim, Porepo coming with a rattle. A good finish resulted in Saracen winning by half a length, a length separating second and third. Time, lmin 16 3-ssec. Dividend, £4 14s.

HERETAUNGA HACK RACING CLUB

The Heretaunga Hack Racing Club’s Meeting took place on the Hutt Park racecourse on Saturday. The weather was fine, but a stiong wind was blowing which unpleasantly raised the dust, and the smoke from an adjacent bush fire was also hanging very thick over the course. The attendance numbered about lOOOpeople. Amongst the visitors was the Premier. Considering that the officers of the Club have been out of harness, as it were, for a while, they carried the meeting through very successfully. Mr Ramsden, the hon secretary, filled the position with credit. Mr Pringle (stapler) and LieutenantColonel Hume (judge) discharged their duties capably. For the third day’s racing of the week speculation was very brisk, Mr Ames and his assistants handling the sum of £3903 during the day. The weather at Miramar Park on Jan. 23 was beautifully fine, there being just sufficient breeze tr cool the atmosphere. As, moreover, there was a total absence of the “ sand storms ” such as previous visitors to Kilbirnie have experienced, the outing was very enjoyable. There were fully 800 people present. Several noticeable improvements have been made since last meeting. An addition has been made to the buildings by the erection of a separate room for the use of the secretary, while the fence from the end of the lawn has been extended towards the end of the straight, so that the public are kept off the track near the totalisator building. A number of necessary notice boards have been erected, and this with other minor improvements were much appreciated by. patrons of the Club, and as the management of the meeting was firstclass yesterday’s meeting may be set down as one of the best the Club have put through. The totalisator building should be enlarged before next meeting, as at present there is too much of a crush for the public when putting money on the machine and receiving dividends. The trotting during the day was hardly up to the standard that has been witnessed at Miramar on previous occasions, although the success of Billy Buttons and Invictus were well deserved. Pearl, who won the. Pony Harness, trotted splendidly, and with very even action. One or two horses were suspected of not being allowed to do their best, but it; is a very difficult matter to detect these little things. When Billy Buttons was finishing in his first race, one solitary individual made himself conspicuous by groaning, as he did not think the pony was trotting fairly, but he was evidently a new chum. Otherwise the win was very popular. Mr F. N. Jones, of Nelson, wh6 worked the totalisator, handled the sum of £2097, which is an increase of £577 on the Club’s last meeting on the 23rd November, 1894. The following are the results : Maiden Handicap Saddle Trot, of 20 sovs ; second 3 sovs from stakes. For all non-winners. Two miles (four laps). 87 Mr Atkinson’s b m Beware, scr (Henry) 1 18 Mr G. Taggart riding, .the. game little grey splendidly, he kept him moving, and despite the efforts of Vancliffe, Bose and Nea

(Maud V. having pulled off in the third lap), he held his position, and won a good race comfortably at the finish by four lengths, three lengths between second and third. Time, 7min Msec. Dividend, <£s Is. Handicap Selling Trot (saddle or harness), of 25 sovs. Winner to be sold) and the whole proceeds to go to the Club. Two miles (four laps). 30 Mr F. Butcher Boy was in the lead, closely attended by Jenny for the first two laps, when Lady Jane began to go up, but breaking, Invictus passed her in the third lap, but she got on terms with him again at the commencement of the last lap, until she broke again, when Invictus established a strong lead, which he maintained to the finish, winning comfortably by three lengths. The rest were distanced. Time, smin 42sec. Dividend, £7 12s. When Lady Jane returned to the paddock it was found that the pneumatic tyre of the sulky she was driven in had burst, which accounts for her defeat.

Pony Handicap Trot (saddle), of 20 sovs; second pony 3 sovs from stakes. Two miles (four laps). 109 Mr Jas. Mr Te Kani Pere, of Gisborne, is now the possessor of the handsome trophy which accompanies the 400 sovs that goes to the winner of the Wellington Cup. There is little doubt thit he and his people will set nearly as much value on the handsome silver cup as on the 400sovs, which he has won through the agency of his sterling horse Mahaki, who, I fancy, will receive a royal reception when he arrives at his home stable. Like most racehorses, Mahaki has had an eventful career, which commenced at the break up

of the Auckland Stud Co., when Mahaki and his dan), Steppe, were purchased by Mr T. Morriu for 200 guineas, and Mahaki was subsequently sold to Mr L. D. Nathan, of Auckland, f<>r 250 guineas, but Mr Wi Pere, the Poverty Bay chief, took a fancy to the son of Jngornar and Steppe, aud ho became the owner of the colt at 350 guineas. The list of performances given below will explain his turf career. Ingoroar, the sire of Mahaki, was imported to the Colony by Mr P. Campbell, of Christchurch, and Steppe, his dam, was imported by Mr G G. Stead in 1881. 1 fancy that if Ingomar were alive now he would be liberally patronised as a stud horse, the recent success of Bessie McCarthy, Hova, Mahaki, Irish Twist, and others, causing breeders to think more highly of the Uncas blood.

Steppe, the dam of Mahaki, is twentyseven years old, and has produced eight foals in New Zealand, each of whom were what I uay term high-class horses, in fact, Mahaki has some very aristocratic relations. Steppe’s first foal in New Zealand was Russley (by Donc-ster), then in respective seasons followed Lady Norah (by Cadogan), Too Soon (by A liter os), Tartar (by Musket), She (by Nordenfeldt), Stepniak (by Nordenfeldt), Mahaki (by Ingomar), and Stepfeldt (by Nordenfeldt.) Mr Morriu last year mated Steppe with Castor, and she is now believed to be in foal. The following is the tabulated pedigree of Mahaki :

The following are the particulars of MahaVi’s performances up to date : At 2yrs —Auckland R.C. Summer : Unplaced in Great Northern Foal Stakes, six furlongs, Bst 101 b, won by Reflector, Bst 101 b. Gisborne R.C. Summer: Unplaced in Hack Scurry, catch weights, four furlongs, won by Kaba. Auckland R.C. Autumn : Unplaced in Northern Champagne Stakes, six furlongs, Bst 101 b, won by Eve, 83t Bib ; third in Onslow Stakes Handicap, six furlongs, 7ab 101 b, won by Royal Rose, Bst 101 b.
