At the meeting of the Education Board on the 30th, Mr Eraser said that a number of children were to be seen daily about the streets when they ought to be at school. The Chairman (Mr J. It. Blair) pointed out that it might be as well for the Board not to interfere, as he believed the school committees were considering the matter, and would very likely take action under the increased powers conferred on them by the Legislature. Mr Young said that it was possible some of the committees were not aware of their powers, and it would be well to advise them. On the motion of Mr Buchanan, the secretary was instructed to send. a circular to the various committees drawing their attention to the matter. Mr Bradey said that some parents did not like to send their children, who had no boots to wear, to school. Mr Fleming (Inspector) said that in the country districts many children attended school barefooted. Mr J. McKerrow, Land Purchase Inspector, is now engaged in drawing up his report upon the properties in the South Island which he recently inspected, and | which are under offer under the Land for I Settlements Act,
