WELLINGTON SOCIAL GOSSIP.

Wellington, January 29.

The reception which was to have been held at Government House on Friday, the 18th, took place on Thursday evening last. Lord Glasgow, I am sorry to say, was still unable to be present. The large rooms and corridors were decorated in the usual artistic way wiih shaded lights, flowers, pot plants and feme, and musical ■elections were playe d during the evening by King’s band. :

Lady Glasgow received in a lovely gown of broad rose pink and sage green striped brocade softened with lace, and she wore her lovely diamonds. Lady Augusta Boyle wore a pretty pink satin gown with cream lace.

The guests of the evening were Bishop and Mrs Wallis. The latter was looking extremely elegant in her wedding gown of white satin and lovely lace, and pearl ornaments. Bishop and Mrs Julius (Christchurch) were also present, the latter wearing a handsome black satin gown relieved' with white lace. Mrs (Judge) Richmond was wearing a handsome black brocade gown ; Lady Prendergast wore a rich black velvet gown trimmed with lace; Mrs Fancourt, a black silx gown with cream lace; Mrs (Dr) Newman, brown brocaded gown .trimmed with biscuit coloured lace ; Mr? Stuart Menteath, lovely gown .of cream brocade and tyco ; Mrs P. Baldwin wore her wedding gown of white satin and lace ; Mrs Rhodes, handsome black satin trimmed with jet and,lace ; Mrs H. D. Crawford, orange crepon silk gown trimmed with coffee lace ; Mrs Barron ■wore black velvet and . white lace ; Mr 3 (Dr) Fell, lovely cream brocade ; Mrs Goring, cream satin and lace gown ; Mrs Mantell, pale heliotrope silk with bands of black velvet - Miss M. Williams, pretty pale blue gown, much trimmed with frills of cream lace ; Mis# Tuckey, black velvet gown relieved with white lace ; Miss Edwin, a pretty pink gown ; Miss Stowe, pale blue silk and white lace ; Miss A. Had field, black gown ; Miss Krull (Wanganui), a pretty cream and blue gown ; Miss Quick, pale pink silk gown trimmed with flowers and lace ; Miss Barron, Bky blue satin gown.

Others present were Mesdames W. Johnston, Duncan, Holm, Maxwell, Williams, Parfitt, Barclay, Harding, Gore, Stowe, Pyrisent, Wilson, Menzies, Fitzgerald, A. Crawford, and the Misses Fairchild, Barclay, -Pearce, Harding, Wilson, Menzies, etc. The Bishop of Salisbury was present, also Bishops Neville, Wilson, Mules and Cowie, Archdeacons Fancourt and Towgood, and the Revs Fitzgerald, Paterson, Cowie, etc. • * * "

The second race day on Thursday last turned out quite as fine as Anniversary Day, perhaps not so pleasant though, as the heat was very great and on the grand stand at the Hutt Park course everyone looked more or less uncomfortably warm.

Among those-present were (of course there were very few compared to the first day), Mrs Maxwell, Mrs W. Johnston, who wore a handsome black gown with yellow waistcoat, gold beaded bonnet with magenta flowers; Miss Johnston, looked very well in a white-figured muslin gown, burnt straw hat with pink roses ; Miss S. Johnston wore a white duck costume ; Mrs (Dr) Collins, tabac brown skirt and jacket with black moire revers, blue blouse, large black hat with forget-me-nots and tips ; Mrs Hermann (Hastings), wore a pretty pale green and white striped feown, white hat with feathers •/ the Misses Krull wore neat blue and white striped costumes, sailor hats with black bands and white wings ; Mrs (Dr) Purdy was in white ; the Misses Heywood also wore white and small black floral hats ; Miss Bennett (Bulls), neat tailor made tweed skirt and jacket, light blouse and sailor hat ; Miss H. Moorhouse, golden brown gown with sleeves of striped satin, black hat trimmed with gold and jet beads and pink flowers ; the Misses Skerrett, Mrs W. Moorhouse, tyTre Baldwin, Madamea and C. Cravr-
