COLONIAL GUMS AND RESINS.

The Government’s timber expert at Home, in one of his recent reports, makes incidental reference to certain vegetable products for which he says there is an opening. He points out that the complaint is made that various valuable products of Australasia are seriously adulterated on arrival in Great Britain, to the greatinjury of the trade. For example, eucalyptus oil sold in the original bottles and not tampered with commands a higher price, and is much used in chemistry. The oil made from eucalyptus globulus and eucalyptus oleosa should, be distinctly marked and fastened safely. Then eucalyptus rostratam produces a most valuable red gum very difficult to obtain pure in England. Its importance in diseases of the chpst and throat can scarcely be overestimated. . Pure acacia gum was selling, at the end of November, at 8s per lb, but it is largely adulterated and difficult to obtain. Finally, the expert says, “ The gums and resins we could supply in immense variety are not even shown at the Imperial Institute, or known to the ordinary chemist and druggist. Cannot something be done to rectify this ?”
