Rio de Janiero, January 10. A local steamer refused to assist the victims on the burning hai-bour boat. Fearing- that they might catch fire themselves, the passengers compelled the captain to proceed on his way, under pain of being shot. Washington, January 11. The Treasurer of South Dakota has absconded, leaving a deficit of 350,000d015, and the State in a bankrupt condition. His embezzlements have also caused the failure of bhe Natiunal Bank of Dakota. Washington, January 10. The House of Representatives refused to vote on the Currency Bill, which has been abandoned. Washington, January 14. The Hawaiian Minister for Foreign Affairs has arrived heie to support the proposed American cable to Hawaii. lie declares that the Hawaiian Government is averse to a foreign-owned cable. The Republicans advocate that a subsidy should be granted to the American cable to Hawaii, instead of one of the Sandwich Islands being givon to Great Britain as a landing station for the Pacific cable.
