CAPE PALLISER LIGHTHOUSE.

Tlio first step toward the erection of the lighthouse on Cape Palliser —a matter in which both mariners and the public will be interested—was taken on Monday, when Captain Allman, Nautical Adviser to the Government, and Mr Hay, G.E., fixed upon the site. They left here in the Government steamer Hinemoa early yesterday morning, and arrived off the Cape about 5 a.m. The Hinemoa steamed backwards and forwards for some time, in order that Captain Allman and Mr Hay might decide upon the best site from the sea. They landed about 8 a.m., and decided that the lighthouse should be erected on a prominent headland about 240 feet high, one mile east of the Cape. The light will show from the eastern side along the coast about E.N.E., and on the western side about W. by N., and will be seen about seven miles south of Pencarrow. The light will be seen for a distance of about 25 miles. A flagstaff has been erected on the proposed site. Captain Allman and Mr Hay will next visit Napier for the purpose of deciding upon a site for the lighthouse at Cape Kidnappers.
