THE LABOUR WORLD.
The December number of the journal of the Department of Labour, in its particulars concerning the labour market, states that the building- trade in Wellington is dull, but that a great improvement is expected. The general retail trade is very good, and there is a steady decrease in the numbers of unskilled, labourers applying for work. The Otaki agent fears that there will be a surplus of labour there soon. At Masterton and Featherston the building trade is dull, but other branches of trade are fairly busy. Trade in general is fairly good at Carterton and Martinborough, and also at Pahiatua. The Pahiatua agent states that there are very few men on the road, and of these some, in his opinion, would be found on the road - no matter how prosperous times might be. At Eketahuna the building trade is fairly busy. At Tinui shearing is in full swing, and all local men are fully employed. Trade of all kinds at Marton is fairly busy. Very few unskilled labourers are on the. roads. At Hunterville trade is fairly good. There is an improvement in the building trade at Palmerston North, and fair business is being done in the retail trade. The number of swaggers has visibly decreased.
