THE ARMENIAN ATROCITIES.

Rome, December 14.

Austria and Italy will not permit Great Britain and Russia a free hand in dealing with the Armenian outrages. ; Constantinople, December 15.

The Porte consents to the ..British, Russian and French Consuls in Erzeroum, the capital of Turkish Armenia, being appointed to hold an enquiry into the recent outrages in Armenia by Turkish soldiers:' , An invitation to. the United States Government to take part has been withdrawn by the Sultan owing to the limitations placed on the Consul by President Cleveland.

Constantinople, December 16

It is believed that the decision of the Porte in regard to the Armenian enquiry indicates that the European entente cordiale will end in a re-grouping of the Powers on the Eastern question. London, December 18.

Mr Gladstone, in a letter to the A ngloArmenian Society, says that if the outi ages alleged against the Turks in Armenia are proved, the civilized world will ask how long they are to be endured.

Great Britain and France, which fought Russia in 1853 in defence of the Sultan, are now with the Sultan’s consent helping him to set his house in order, with the assistance of Russia. The later arrangement is more sensible, but before it is over there may be curious complications. The difficulties will commence when the three Consuls make their report.
